152998 2003-06-16 12:25:00 Every week or two, a mystery icon arrives from nowhere on my desktop in Windows 98. It is merely entitled "~", sized 205KB, and has no other features under Properties, other than its attribute is 'archive'. My virus checker says that it can't find anything wrong with the file. So I just send it off to the Recycle Bin. Any clues what this is? Roly (2259)
152999 2003-06-16 12:29:00 Hello.

I have noticed that my mother is having the same problem with this mystery icon. She is running win xp. so if you do find out - I would be interested to know as well.

153000 2003-06-16 12:35:00 That "~" (tilde) file is most probably appearing as the result of installing the "April 2003, Cumulative Patch for Outlook Express (330994)" .

Microsoft is aware of the problem and is supposedly working on a fix .

Many people are experiencing this problem and from what I've read about this problem that icon will also reappear when you reply to an e-mail and you have your Outlook Express set up to enter the persons e-mail address to your address book whenever you reply to an e-mail .

You can either just put up with it or follow the uninstall directions for the patch here ( . microsoft . com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/330994/default . asp" target="_blank">www . microsoft . com)

153002 2003-06-16 22:03:00 Well I'm glad I'm not the only one chasing this problem.
My ~ file is appearing in the boot directory and had me more than a little worried.
I'll also have to apologise to my Daughter as I was blaming her favourite program (MSN Messenger) for the problem. :-)
