153247 2003-06-18 02:53:00 Hello, all,
I have just searched the "archives" but can't find anything about my current problem.
My O/S is ME and I have Adaptec installed.
I have saved a number of photos to a Samsung CD. All was OK until yesterday when I loaded a photo onto the CD, tried to recover it and the System "Hung". I tried all the options from "My Computer", explore, open with, search, etc. but the PC "hung" on all occasions, necessitating a manual exit and re-start.

I went to desktop, Adaptec and their scandisc option. This gave me the file name and the fact that it was corrupted. I opted for the "repair disc" option but when I went to access the disc through "My Computer" the disc came up as "No Data"!

Went back to Adaptec, scan disc, but this time opted for "no" when the repair disc option was offered. Returning to My Computer showed that the disc did indeed have "Copy" on it but again when accessing the disc - you guessed it - it "hung"!

The disc has a lot of photos that I would like to access. How can I get rid of the offending file? If my memory serves me right I feel that there may be a programme that will do this but I am unsure if it only applies to the Hard Drive or if it includes CD's as well.

Also, would the photo be at fault (unlikely, all the rest are OK) or, more likely, the file name I have given to the photo? I have also scanned the disc with my Virus programme, result - the PC hung again!

All very frustrating......help, please.
Thanks, Bill.

153248 2003-06-18 12:20:00 Bump :D

Sorry Bill, I can't help as I don't write to CDs yet, but bump this up to the top of the page again if you don't get an answer soon.

As far as I know you can't fix files on CDs unless they are CD-RW, but I think there are programs for extracting data back to your HDD and you can use normal utilities there.

Cheers

153249 2003-06-18 12:51:00 IsoBuster Pro 1.4 will extract the corrupted/damaged data from the cds back to your hard drive. You will then have to use a new cd and re-make your picture collection.

You say you were adding files to the cd...was this like a rewriteable cd, or multisession?? What happened to the original pic files? Are they still on your hard drive somewhere?? Were you cutting and pasting, or copying and pasting? :)

Thanks, PoWa, Billy T,

FYI: Some of the originals are on the HD, some I scanned directly to the CD, consequently they are the only "copies" I have - some of the originals have been returned to the owners! The disc is a straight CD, not a CD-RW. The last and I presume the corrupt file was being scanned direct from my Microtek 4700 scanner via the software supplied with it, viz. Scanmaker Scanwizard 5.

I have accessed the site, PoWa, but I am unsure of the correct download - would I have to have a ZIP decoder installed to accept the ZIP file? What is the difference between the *.zip and the *.rar?

Believe me, I am very gateful for your help!
Thanks, Bill.

153251 2003-06-20 00:01:00 The .Zip and .RAR are both compressed files, RAR supposedly more-so, but the WinRAR app is less common, so stick with the .Zip :-)

What's happened is the CD's thrown a wobbly (You probably guessed :p) and you're going to have to look at a previous session to get the data from it, because it wont have written the Lead-Out.

A tool like what PoWa has recommended should be just the ticket!
