I think the reasning is simplicity and cost. The stand-alone dvd is cheaper,100 times easier but can only do 1-to-1 copies.

The pc avenue requires a hotrod pc with a couple extra grands worth of goodies bolted into her along with some big hard drives, then you have a steep learning curve and no garentee of the quality of the finished product untill you have perfected the black art.

But,with the pc routh you get all the editing options you could ever think of,and once you learn the concepts/terminolg and get some good results it is far more rewarding then doing 1-to-1 copies.

Although, leaving your pc running at 100 percent load for 20 hours while it encodes video only to find that the final product has out of sync audio and defects in the picture can be a little frustrating(especially when you used the exact same methodolgy that took 6 months to perfect and that was thought fool proof)

Yup... the quest for perfection has led me down several avenues... I can now back up a DVD no less than 4 different ways!! Lol... ;)

Believe it or not, 1 - 1 copies are probably the toughest to do...

100 per cent load for 20 hours is probably a bit generous... Doing it with the DVD2DVD-R program in conjunction with Cinema Craft Encoder 2.5 will probably take 8 hours. Doing the same movie using DVDShrink 1.03 will get it done in 30 minutes.

It's all a learning curve, and trust me on the number of ways to copy the same disc...

Lo.

153138 2003-06-18 15:06:00 ya,20 hours to re-encode using tmpgenc with filters and mutiple bit-rate.

I dont have a dvd burner,my quest has been to copy, edit, then re-encode down to a format that can be played of a cd(vcd, svcd, xvcd).

I spent hundreds of hours learning the art, transferring anologe to digital, cutting it up,adding bells and whistles and re-encoding it,then burning it to cd.

I then presented the finished 5 vcd set to my father, who after watching them all decided he wanted 1-to-1 copies of the original video's.The video's were mostly the last 20 years of the familys involvement in motorcycle racing and a few of some of the larger jobs our company has done(anyone seen athletic park lately?)

Lmao.

Maybe Lo is rich :) or maybe said too much

I make DVD backups to DivX at the moment. Very nice quality to fit on 2cds!

Do you ever think stand-alone players will ever play divX, Xvid etc??

As far as i know stand alone dvd players that play divx are already on the market(slim chance of them being in nz yet i guess). There has been a few posts about them on the vcdhelp.com forums.

I just received a promotional email from Ascent Technology, and it included a notification of a new model DVD writer that isn't a million miles away from that price already - Liteon LD400D, DVD±RW/±R Writer, DVD, DVD 8R/4W/2.4RW, CD 32R/24W/10RW, Internal, IDE

Don't know anything about the quality and reliability of the brand, but it is around $690 inc GST!
