153719 2003-06-20 01:29:00 Here's the prob, new P4 2.4 machine with a 80GB HDD, Win98 only sees it as 10GB, any ideas or help? Bios does reports the HDD correctly as 80GB.

Cheers, Jeff.

Search the MS knowledgebase

Search the drive manufacturer's website

Throw the drive away

Return the drive to the source of purchase

Give the machine to another person

Use another operating system

Daresay there will be other suggestions as well.

You are too right Merlin.

You will need to create an extended partition containing the remainder of the Data. The primary FAT32 partition can only be 10 Gigs, but FAT32 in the extended partition can be larger AFAIK.

Win95/98 wasnt ever intended to be used on High-Spec PC's with the huge sized HDD's we have today, you may be best looking into an XP upgrade so you can convert your partitiosn to NTFS.

Merlin is right though, check the MS KB :-)

Cheers

153722 2003-06-20 02:40:00 All crap! Ignore them.

I just formated an 80GB HDD in Win98SE and it too only showed up as 10GB but if you just change the figure to what ever you want it will still do it.
I put in a % figure rather than the actual size as I wanted 20% of the drive for win98SE.

My reason for doing this was to dual boot with WinXP.

By default when setting it up, it only see's it as 10 gig.. or something, Im not 100% on this though.

Partition Magic warns of this when resizing partitions!

You would then want to create and extended partition to save on having to format the PC.

153724 2003-06-20 02:59:00 Hmm.. Perhaps this is what I was thinking of, I found some info here:
support.microsoft.com
at MS KB Article 154997:

NOTE: Although the FAT32 file system supports hard disks up to 2 terabytes in size, some hard disks may not be able to contain bootable partitions that are larger than 7.8 GB because of limitations in your computer's basic input/output system (BIOS) INT13 interface. Please contact your hardware manufacturer to determine if your computer's BIOS supports the updated INT13 extensions. For additional information about Windows 95 OSR2, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

There is some other interesting things there too :-)

Sorry about the confusion ;-)

153725 2003-06-20 03:11:00 You may also want to get the WIN98 Large IDE Update from Microsoft here ( www.microsoft.com) , and the format update 263044usa8.exe for large drives from here (support.microsoft.com). Terry Porritt (14)
153726 2003-06-20 03:15:00 .....sorry, that should be FDISK update, not format. Terry Porritt (14)
153727 2003-06-21 11:35:00 Cheers all, sorted, it is a Win95-98 prob with FDisk and format, d/loaded Seagate's disk manager software and all is sweet. Dak2 (1963)
153728 2005-01-15 17:05:00 Your Question:

Machine with a 80GB HDD
FDISK sees the max partition as 10GB only,
Bios detect the HDD correctly as 80GB.

Simple Solution:

Boot you System with windows XP or 2000 bootable CD and do the partition.
you won't face any problem. Good Luck
