153707 2003-06-20 00:10:00 I have just tried to add a new Sony DVD-ROM drive to my computer.
It is an Athlon 1800XP with 328MB RAM and a 20GB hard drive.
However when I started the comp up after installing the new (Sony) DVD ROM drive it appears that my comp isn't booting up properly. When I initially installed the new DVD-ROM drive I still had the CD-ROm and CD-Writer drives in the system as well.
Given that it wasn't booting I took them both out just leaving the floppy/hard/DVD-ROM drives in.
I have set the DVD-ROM drive as the master on the 2nd IDE cable and the hard drive is set as the master on the Primary IDE cable.
Nothing comes up on the monitor screen and the LED (?) light on the dvd Rom lights up but not the one on the floppy drive.
Nothing happens when I hit the reset button.
Completely bambozzled!
Any suggestions?!

Thanks in advance.

153708 2003-06-20 00:39:00 I have exactly the same thing unless my DVD is Primay Master, try that! Chilling_Silently (228)
153709 2003-06-20 00:44:00 Remove the DVD drive and see if it boots. Do you have an IDE cable reversed somewhere? JohnD (509)

153712 2003-06-20 01:21:00 Hi all

Thanks for the input
It looks like a compatability issue.
I ensured that all IDE cables and master/slave settings were set correctly.
But it still wouldn't boot up etc.
So I took the DVD-ROM drive out and, with only the hard drive connected/attached the system booted up just fine.
I then installed the new DVD-ROM drive in my older Celeron 500MHz system and it worked just fine!
So go figure ...
It wouldn't work in a 2-3 month old Athlon 1800XP system but it would in an old (2- years) Celeron 500MHz system!

Mind you it's not the first time I've had a "compatability" problem with the Athlon -- a cheapo ($50) Genius soundcard I installed in it wouldn't work either but would go just fine in the older Celeron system.
I have no problem with the Athlon as a performing chip but gee, it sure seems to have some hardware compatability issues!

I will try installing the DVD-ROM drive as the master on the secondary channel and the HDD as the master on the secondary channel (as suggested by Mr Chilling Silently) --- will let you know how I get on.

Thanks for the input
