153684 2003-06-19 22:32:00 I have set up a networked Compaq Deskpro as dual-boot with Win98SE & Mandrake 9.1. Everything works fine except MDK can't find the sound card. Sound is onboard and is ES1869 PnP AudioDrive.

I've downloaded the latest drivers from both Compaq and ESS Technologies. I've emailed ESS' Tech Support - no reply yet. I've searched this site, a gazillion LUGS and trawled the internet for help but can't seem to get anywhere. :_l

I can find the same question being asked all over the place - but they usually have 0 replies. :0

Pleeeze can someone help!

153685 2003-06-19 23:31:00 One of the joys of Linux. If the vendor doesn't supply Linux drivers for their hardware, has someone created their own... that works. You never really know unless you find it on the internet somewhere. Dolby Digital (160)
153686 2003-06-20 00:37:00 Most hardware is really good with Linux these days - but every now and then you strike this kind of thing! In the end you have to ask how much is it worth to muck around any longer? Might just have to go and buy a PCI sound card? JohnD (509)

153688 2003-06-20 04:28:00 It is aparantly supported, because alsa (www.alsa-project.org) support it

I'm not familiar with the card. Is it ISA?

Disabling PNP in your BIOS might help.

153689 2003-06-20 05:10:00 It might pay to make sure that you are using alsa, rather than OSS . It might not be the default sound system .

The ESS series were/are used on a lot of cheapo cards . I had one going in a DeskPro with RH7 . 1 . . . I pulled it and put in a SB card, but that was only because it had only line outputs, and I wanted (quiet) speakers, without using amplified speakers .

But Compaq DeskPros have given "interesting" time to people wanting to run Linux on them . :D An ESS on the motherboard night not run as expected . :D

Is it definitely not being detected? Does it not show up with dmesg?

I’m trying the ALSA drivers. Thanks! :)

Can’t really afford to do that – I’ve got 2 dozen :D of these computers networked that I want to set up with Linux & sound. Gotta find a way with the existing hardware! :)

Thanks! That’s a great link, especially helpful are the HOW TO links from there. I’m still working on it all – and trying to still have a life! :D
