153675 2003-06-19 22:32:00 I have a computer with an almost inoperable Win98SE on it. I have been using this computer for years with upgrades, new programmes, removals etc etc . With hard disks crashing, new mother boards, new processors (latest Athalon 1800) I now can't even get my printer to work!
So, as I have two HD's -- C 40gb D 80gb I wondered if I could shift all my stuff to the C drive, reformat D and install a clean Win98 on the D drive. Then install the programmes I use to that drive.
Could I then access the C drive for data. Can it be set up to boot into the old win98 on the C drive? Thanks for any help David

153676 2003-06-19 22:38:00 What if you transfer all your downloaded software installation files, bookmarks backup, Address book backup etc onto D drive then format C drive and reinstall win 98 on to the C drive again. Then just install the programs and the backups from your D drive. Icarus (3936)
153677 2003-06-19 22:48:00 Thanks Icarus. That was my first thought but a lot of the programmes are downloaded shareware, freeware etc and I have no idea where they all came from. so i thought if I could retain the ability to boot into the old Win 98 and have a clean install on D, I could then just install the serious programmes. 153678 2003-06-19 22:56:00 hehe fair enough, sounds kinda messy though. You may need to get a boot manager of some sort. There is a free on about with a nag screen, unless you make a donation, called OSL 2000 boot manager http://www.osloader.com or alternatively you could pay for Powerquest's bootmanager 8. Goodluck matey ;) Icarus (3936)
153679 2003-06-19 23:06:00 Thanks Icarus. Sounds like just what I want. I'll let you know how it goes! David DavidW (532)
153680 2003-06-19 23:08:00 XOSL (Extended Operating System Loader) is also worth a look at for dual booting - it is also free - see http://www.xosl.org. JohnD (509)
153681 2003-06-20 01:58:00 Given your apparent lack of knowledge, the path will end in disaster.

What you ask is possible.

How much money do you have?

153682 2003-06-20 02:11:00 That's not a very profffesional approach to it Merlin!

Im not 100% sure on what you're wanting here...

You've got a PC with Win98 which is apparently in desperate need of a format by the sounds of things!
Now, from what you said:
>I have two HD's -- C 40gb D 80gb I wondered if I could shift all my stuff
> to the C drive, reformat D and install a clean Win98 on the D drive.
So, Win98 is currently installed on D: correct?

You're wanting to copy across all your important Data, so check the Formatting FAQ here at PressF1 (Link in the top-right corner of the page).

I doubt you will need a boot manager, it should pick things up, but it may be a good idea to download XOSL and make a disk first off, just in case things do turn nasty :-)

Your best bet would be to make a folder called backups and copy your entire HDD across, then pick out what you wanna keep and copy it to another location.. then delete the backups folder when you're satisfied you have everything you need!

Hope this helps

153683 2003-06-20 02:13:00 save all the data you need to the slowest drive. make sure the gfastest drive is set as the primary master then partition and format. then install windows and drivers. you will still be able to access the other drive so you can reinstall all you old programs.

its pointless bothering with a dual boot if the OS is shot to hell and back.
