153662 2003-06-19 21:00:00 Just saw an ad in the latest netguide from quicksilver claiming increased speed (up to 3 times) over a dial up called slipstream for 32.95 per month. If this is indeed the way dialup is going why am I paying for basically the same speed using jetstart? Will telecom come to the party, ya think, and increase the speed of the jetstart service? 153663 2003-06-20 00:02:00 Slipstream from quicksilver is actuall a programme you install. This programme works as a proxy.

What it does is downgrade the quality of Gifs and jpgs so that they are quicker to download and hence your 3x speed increase. I used it during a free trial month, but i only used it for about a week.

The perception was that pages actually took longer to load, this is because of the way the proxy is used to download and display the images.

For example a page loads and a few seconds later the images start appearing. With this slipstream the whole page kinda had to load before you even saw anything.

153664 2003-06-20 00:10:00 What the Quicksilver thing does is effectively increase the transfer. It doesn't actually make it any quicker though, it just seems like it.

It will reduce the quality of images you're looking at so that they will download faster and other similar things. Not really worth it I don't think. Not that I've tried it though.

153665 2003-06-20 04:53:00 My $10 worth .

Avoid QuickSilver until they fix up their problems, they still haven't resolved my security concerns I placed with them nor have they gotten back to me . Until then I'd recommend someone who actually uses a one way encryption on passwords so Helpdesk don't have access to that information, still not sure if it is encrypted or the password is in plain text form but I can guarantee that if someone wants a quicksilver account phone them pretending to be a customer of there's and they are happy to comply . Well from what I've done, it was that simple .

This information is about 2 months old now, I should check to see if they've sorted it out before saying this but they haven't told me anything yet so I can only assume this is how it still is with them .
