153666 2003-06-19 20:16:00 I installed Win2k thinking that it woud be more stable, but I must say I am a bit disapointed.
2gig pentium 4, MSI ti4200. Running win2k with service pack2.
When playing Age of Mythology it will spontainiosly restart the pc. Damned annoying. Aliens verses Preditor will not even load.
This is a clean install of win2k, I always keep my antivirus uptodate.
As sick as it sounds, if cannot resolve my querks I will go back to win98.

153667 2003-06-19 22:33:00 Have you checked to see if your power supply unit is up to the task for the components in your system. Mine used to do that in XP. Changed PSU and no more problems. Icarus (3936)
153668 2003-06-19 23:28:00 Are those programs compatible with W2K Ron? If not, have you looked at using the W2K compatibility mode for older software?

If they predate W2K you may well have problems, but if they are claimed to be suitable for W2K then perhaps you need to look at your system or PSU as suggested.

Cheers

153669 2003-06-19 23:50:00 Win2K_SP2 is old news as well, SP3 came out approx. 7 months ago!

Update your drivers and DirectX 9 too.. and Im also for the PSU needing upgrading!

You have a Ti4200? What else is in that box? I garauntee it wont like running on less than a 250watt PSU.

I have a 250w PSU, DVD Drive, Soundcard, NIC, GF4 MX 440SE-T and I cant enable TV-O when playing a DVD coz it'll reboot my PC because of the lack of power to other essential items!

153670 2003-06-20 04:34:00 You haven't tried overclocking your PC or graphics card at all, have you?

Lo.

153671 2003-06-20 05:01:00 W2K will use more memory than W98. If you get problems when you are playing a big game, I suspect you are hitting a flakey bit (or byte :D) of memory.

The restarts are due to the "auto restart on failure" option. Try resetting that so you get a Blue Screen. I have an idea that the error will be a pointer error, or something like that which is assoiated with memory.

If you are over running the memory, or it and the CPU, try running at normal speed. If you are running at the specified speed, try (just for a test) dropping down one step in speed. There's a fairly strong opinion around that most memory is more reliable at one speed slower than its label rating. Some of the Linux experts recommend using "133" Mhz ram at 100.

trouble is when I first converted to win2k the games ran better than ever before.
Actually the reason I reformated was that no matter what I tried I could not get the internet going after I tried setting up a network(which did not work).
So I got the internet working but now this.
I never overclock as I am witnessing pc's are unstable enough with trying to crank them up.
It seems that with just about every game we try to play it sh-t's itself.
wish I had a way of diagnosing.
But thanks for your pointers none the less.

153673 2003-06-20 10:24:00 I cant really tell you the reason... its just Win2k. In my experience, Win2k is exceptionally bad at handling any kind of multimedia work and the sorts of problems are exactly those that I have experienced. For games or movies you are much better off using Win98. The best work around Ive found is to dual boot Win98 - 2k, and use 2k for anything other than multimedia work.

Unless of course you have XP which handles both really well if you put in some time tweaking the numerous annoying settings.

153674 2003-06-20 11:42:00 O.k guys I had a look at my bios.
I was thinking my problems seem to happen when the pc is under load.
& I rememberd that the other week that I took the cooling block ofto clean. Which made me wonder did I put thing back together properly. So when I checked my bios sure enough the cpu temp was 71 degrees celcius.
So I had a look while system was off. & noticed that the fan plug was not quite plugged in all the way. As it clicks in that last little bit.
Joy Joy feelings came upon me when things went well there after.

Now If I could just figure out wy my other p4 keeps popping with the "error incorrect bios update cpuid blablabla"
