Is it ISA? > > Disabling PNP in your BIOS might help. No its not ISA. Its onboard. And disabling PnP in the BIOS isnt an available option. Your link to ALSA was very helpful.:D Ive downloaded and installed the drivers over the weekend. (Had to give up with MDK 9.1 as the alsa installation couldnt find the kernel source. Finally used Red Hat 8 and they installed fine. Ill get back to MDK as a separate issue later!) Im still working through the process currently stuck on inserting the module. When I go: modprobe snd-ess18xx; I get: /lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/sound/isa/snd-ess18xx.o: init_module: No such device Oh, and Ive tried different IRQs still nothing.:( Its worth all this effort as Ive got 2 dozen of these computers networked that I want to set up with Linux and sound.:D |

Not an option for me - Ive got 2 dozen of these computers networked that I want to set up with Linux & sound . | 153696 | 2003-06-24 02:30:00 | Mandrake [and most likely redhat] comes with alsa so you shouldn't have to compile anything. Any driver with a name starting with snd- is an alsa driver. You could try the "sndconfig" command on mandrake/redhat to configure the card. You will have to install the sndconfig package on mdk. |

| 153697 | 2003-06-24 02:39:00 | I quick search turned up these: www.geocrawler.com www.geocrawler.com It looks like they were using the soundblaster driver. BTW, it would appear the card is ISA even though its on board, which is why its having problems. |

| 153698 | 2003-06-24 02:55:00 | I think the problem might be that the module is written for ISA cards, and the ESS chip is on the motherboard. :D As I said, Compaq computers often presnt "opportunities" for Linux. (Some people call such opprotunities "problems".) :_| | Graham L (2) | ||

How can I tell if I'm running alsa or oss? And how can I switch between the two? ?:l > Any driver with a name starting with snd- is an alsa driver . Did that on both - sndconfig says it can't find the sound card . I'm going to follow the threads you've given me . The first one especially looks hopeful . The writer looks like they've got hardware identical to mine running sound under Linux 3 years ago! :D If they can do it . . . ;) |

So what suggestions do you have? ?: l As I said, Compaq computers > often presnt "opportunities" for Linux. (Some people > call such opprotunities "problems".) :_| I'm enjoying the learning but I have major time constraints + deadline looming. Helpful suggestions would be gratefully received! ;) |

| 153701 | 2006-03-08 04:15:00 | Neither of the above links work for me. I also am having a problem with ess 1869 sound card on mother board of compag, however under knoppix and mepis it configures just great alsaconf sets it up with no problem. However centos doesn't can you help?? The driver for the other two are isa pnp and just work.. | NoJock (4054) | ||
| 153702 | 2006-03-08 05:22:00 | aha, there is support for the ESS18XX drivers in the 2.6.14.5 kernel at least. You have to enable general ISA bus support in the kernel, to see the ISA devices under ALSA and then you can see a generic ESS18XX driver option in the kernel. I have no idea what Mandrake 9.1 does with regards to compiling kernels, but I'd compile my own later kernel and see how it goes (well at least that's what I did to get an old Vortex 2 soundcard going). |
