2003-06-19 10:17:00 | Hi For some unknown reason I now cannot get Regedit to stay open. I click on the icon or run the exe file from Windows Explorer or "Start RUN and its the same each time - Opens for a split second and then closes. What can I do to get this utility to remain open to view - even if I don't need at this stage to edit the registry. TIA Ron

2003-06-19 11:45:00 | I had that problem on someones PC just recently. First download the latest Ad-Aware then give the PC the three fingered salute (Ctrl + Alt + Del) and end task anything that is not neccessary (basically everything but Explorer and System Tray). When doing that check to see if there is a program called Winservices.exe (ElkSoft was the software maker) running and there was another program made by them but can't remember it's name. | mikebartnz (21) | |
2003-06-19 12:55:00 | Mike Many thanks Have run Ad-Aware 6.0 but to no avail Before and after I rebooted Any other suggestions? Incidentally, same problem from a safe mode boot Am I looking at a system restore perhaps? - but I would prefer that to be an absolutely last resort and even then it may not work. Could it be Zone Alarm which I have installed after I last ran Regedit??? Cheers Ron

2003-06-19 20:16:00 | Hi Mike and all Just a further update - Now the Ctrl-ALt-Del action to access the task manager does exectly the same thing - ie flashes on screen for a second and then disappears. So not just regedit Any thoughts? TIA Ron

2003-06-19 21:19:00 | I have had this problem b4 and it is a virus but I cant remember what its called, go to the symantec website and search for your symptons and you will find it. | zip1nz (2251) | |
2003-06-20 00:11:00 | Sounds as if it could possibly be some sort of permission issue. Are you using an admin account? | -=JM=- (16) | |
2003-06-20 01:09:00 | It sounds like you might have the Bugbear virus (I think that was the one that closed Task Manager and regedit?). Download a removal tool off symantec.com and run it - may take a while to finish its scan though. PS If I'm wrong about the virus name, feel free to correct me!
