154124 2003-06-22 02:48:00 I have an AOpen CD writer which at the moment is refusing to read cd's that are inserted into it,CDRW4048,it also refuses to write cd's.Even when i try to access it through RUN on the program folder it comes up as "the device is not ready". Ihave checked the connections in the computer(even cleaned the dust out),tried a uninstall/reinstall,all i get is the light flashing on and off with no sound from motor/drive? when inserting the cd. Any1 got some ideas 4 me any help will b appreciated. When replying could it be nice and easy with terms that are reasonably easy 2 understand. CHEERS FROM THE DEEP SOUTH. SMan southernman (2481)
154125 2003-06-22 03:55:00 Keeping it simple:

The light works, so the power is getting to the drive
The motor is not spinning the CD up, as you cannot hear it.

The drive is broken.

Replace it.

154126 2003-06-22 04:03:00 I have exactly the same cd writer.

Ok. Firstly what software are you using to write your cds? What operating system are you using?

Secondly, what firmware version are you using on your writer? It should tell you in the text when starting up the pc. Either 1.5 or 1.7 or whatever.

When I first got mine, I actually had to downgrade it from 1.7 to 1.5 to actually get it to write cds.

Try here: Aopen cd-rw 4048 (download.aopen.com.tw)

Recently I upgraded again to the 1.7, and it still works fine.

Another thing you can try is ditching Nero, if you are using it. I never got it working, kept making coasters :). Try something like Roxio Easy Cd/Dvd Creator.

154127 2003-06-22 04:07:00 Also, try rebooting, then before windows starts, remove any discs in the drive.

I'm currently having a problem with mine when a rewriteable disc is stuck in the drive, it won't even open to eject, or make any sounds or start or anything.

Only thing that fixed it was getting the cd out b4 windows starts.

Hey Powa. Try going into My computer & right click on your CD Writer & choose "Eject"

Works for me when the buttons on the front won't or don't.

154129 2003-06-22 10:07:00 Lol - even that makes it jam. Its like the whole drive is frozen or something. Only happens when a cd-rw disc has been written to, and then you try and take it out. PoWa (203)
154130 2003-06-22 23:23:00 It might be a bit drastic, but that little hole on the front of the drive will take a paperclip, and allow you to forcefully eject the tray. So long as its not writing, shouldn't be a problem (provided you not ding it like that all the time...) Lizard (2409)
154131 2003-06-23 20:56:00 Cheers godfather,i also forgot to mention that had crossed my mind also, but the only driver on the web site(aopen,CDRW4048) was for ms-dos.does the driver have to be aopen or can i download others southernman (2481)
154132 2003-06-23 21:14:00 Cheers powa, a brief reply to your points. 1,Nero and 98se. 2, Version 1.07. As to nero I have had the coaster effect as well, but out of 150+ cd's burnt, would be less than 5%,so am not to worried about the losses. My cd's have a hard life so that is why turn around and burn it again if it gets 2 scratchy. Way easier to replace burnt 1's (90 odd cents each) than real 1's. southernman (2481)
154133 2003-06-23 22:02:00 I use the same CDRW & never installed any drivers for it. Device manager shows MS 4-23-1999 - works fine. Re ejecting - I find, if using a CDRW, you need Incd, and it will not manually eject - only way is to right click it's Icon and do it from there.
