154051 2003-06-21 10:48:00 Hi all
I want to transfer some files from the home PC to a laptop. What do I need to do this?
Cheers

154052 2003-06-21 10:59:00 I think you might need a network
Have a look throw this FAQ (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz) on how to set-up a network,

But lets see what other ideas people have.

154053 2003-06-21 11:25:00 How many files and how big are they? Do you have a CD-burner on the home PC and a CD drive on the laptop?

If the files are small enough or not too many and you have the cd burner on the home machine and a cd-rom on the lappie then a quick & easy option would be to burn the files onto a CDRW and just load them onto the lappie off the cd.

If this is not possible and the files are really small (and not too many) then there is always the old fashioned option of transferring to a floppy disk off the home machine and onto the lappie this way :)

otherwise you may have to set up a network as suggested (assuming both machines have NIC's)

154054 2003-06-22 00:14:00 I bought one of the little "keyring" USB drives to do just this and also to transfer files laptop to desktop. Lappy doesn't have a cd burner and desktop doesn't have a networking card. I have found it ultra useful for storing pics and larger files as well. Pams_Note (4021)
154055 2003-06-23 12:01:00 There is an old DOS-based programme called Fastlynx that was great for doing cptr-cptr file transfers through a special cable called a Laplink cable (and various other names). That programme would still do it but of course it doesn't have long filename support. If perchance all the files you want to transfer have 8 + 3 format filenames this should still do the job for you (the cables are readily available). Alternatively, if the files are all data files (so truncated file names shouldn't matter), and you get the programme and run it through Windows, this should truncate any long file names as it goes. It would depend on how the copied files were subsequently used - if anything couldn't handle the shortened filenames this transfer method would not be suitable. Robin S_ (86)
154056 2003-06-23 12:13:00 Actually fastlynx is still alive and kicking goto www.checkmark.com.au
to download the latest demo version. It works through usb - usb now with a special cable, wow. It is good for quick and easy one off transfers though. The only catch with the demo is 10meg or 10 files at a time, so just zip whatever you need into 10meg blocks and transfer away.

154057 2003-06-23 12:13:00 if one of the machines has xp you are in luck use the file transfer wizard
It will step you through the process and allow you to make a program disk for a non xp machine also. you will also need a null modem cable or as Robin called it a laplink cable if you use this method

154058 2003-06-23 13:17:00 But not Win95. mikebartnz (21)
154059 2003-06-23 13:21:00 Sorry but all they need to do is make a direct cable connection which will also be on the FAQ. To do this you normally need a printer to printer port crossover cable. mikebartnz (21)
154060 2003-06-23 13:24:00 Actually a null modem cable has nothing to do with a laplink cable. mikebartnz (21)
