2003-06-21 10:45:00 | I recentley had to re-install windows XP because of a problem at boot (kept on resetting) and now that I got all that sorted, it seems that my sound card isnt being detected. When I go to play an mp3 etc it sez "Cannot play back the audio stream: no audio hardware is available, or the hardware is not responding." HELP!? How do I get my sound bak! Thanks.

2003-06-21 11:52:00 | What does the Device Manager say? Could try physically removing the card and restart with no card. Put it back in and see if it is detected. | JohnD (509) | |
2003-06-21 12:30:00 | load the audio drivers(on the motherboard drivers disc if its intergrated audio) | metla (154) | |
2003-06-22 02:07:00 | It is a seperate sound card. I dont want to have to open the box, as this will void the warranty (sealed box). I have had a look in the device manager, but I cant really understand it. Any suggestions? | promethius (1998) | |

2003-06-22 02:21:00 | As metla has suggested, you will need to install the sound card drivers. Your sound card will have come with a installation CD which will contain all the required software/drivers. | Jen C (20) | |
2003-06-22 02:24:00 | Reloading XP will have removed the drivers for the sound card. You will need to either find the drivers that *should* have been supplied with your system, or determine the make and model of the sound card so you can download the drivers. When you say you cannot open the box without voiding the warranty, can you explain? Is that simply because thats what is written on the sticker, or have you been told that by the Retailer? I have not seen a system yet where this will happen, you will only void the warranty if you cause a problem by fiddling in the box. The sticker may say that by removing it the warranty is voided, but thats not the actual truth for HP, Compaq, PC Company. If you open it up and install new hardware for instance, the original warranty still applies but not for the new hardware you installed or any problem related to or caused by the new hardware.

2003-06-22 02:44:00 | I brought my PC at a local PC shop and they told me that if the seal is brocken then the warranty is void...is this not standard procedure? I have had a look through the CD's that came with my PC and I cant find anything that looks like sound card drivers...how do I find out what make/model my sound card is?

2003-06-22 02:52:00 | oops...my mistake, I just opened my box (warranty was only for 1 year! and that's up) and it seems I dont have a seperate sound card and it's integrated after all! I found the cd and am installing the drivers... hopefully this will sort it out... Thanks for all your help (everyone).

2003-06-22 04:05:00 | > I brought my PC at a local PC shop and they told me > that if the seal is brocken then the warranty is > void . . . is this not standard procedure? No its not, and one should not accept such terms? When the major brand names don't impose those terms its not acceptable for the local shop to do so in my opinion . A recent PC from a "local shop" here has no seal or sticker on the box and a 1 year warranty, applying to the components listed in the schedule of parts . I am sure you will fix the sound now, good luck with the drivers .
