154008 2003-06-21 08:33:00 When I am working off the net the computer keeps throwing up the Dial-up Dialogue screen at irregular intervals. This is particularly prevalent after I have just logged off the net or when I send a job away to my printer on the ethernet connection. Sometimes as many as four repetitions of the screen have to be cancelled before it desists. Apparently the problem is not that uncommon but no-one seems able to recall how to fix it.
I am using IE6.0 on an Intel Pentium III 450mhz computer with a KTX-56K12-G modem, Windows 98SE OS.
The problem is long standing

154009 2003-06-22 04:30:00 Get ZoneAlarm or another firewall that will also block outgoing connections and from that you will be able to tell what program/s are doing it. Also get hold of Ad-Aware. mikebartnz (21)
154010 2003-06-22 04:51:00 Hi,

Have a look in the Task Bar (bottom right cnr of screen).
See how many icons you have running there, a few of those may have "connect to the internet" set in their preferences?

Type in "msconfig" in the run box to setup what starts at windows startup.

154011 2003-06-22 05:46:00 Hi. Both the previous posts should help. More specifically:

Go Start | Programs | StartUp | and right-click on any item that you don't want to start up at every time you start the PC, and click Delete.

If that doesn't work...

Go Start | Run | type in MSCONFIG | Ok | Startup

Now look at which boxes are checked to enable its programme to start up every time you start your computer. Uncheck those that you think MAY be causing the issue (these changes are easily reverseable). Don't ponder too much at this stage about things that you don't recognise. Report back if anything's unclear.

Sometimes disabling a startup doesn't work, often because the programme itself has a startup setting enabled so that it overrides the Startup that you've just disabled. In these cases, find the programme itself (the command line will be shown in Startup, which will tell you what programme it is), then open the programme in its usual way and find the preference/option setting that will allow you to disable its auto-connect function.

If none of the above work, it would appear that you have an invasive application trying some tricks. In this case run Adaware or equivalent (search the PressF1 for more info on this). If that still doesn't solve the issue, suspect worst, a virus or RAT (Remote Access Trojan) - again, search this forum for tactics to resolve the issue - I made a post some time ago on this subject.

Hope to hear back from you what works, or what doesn't.

154012 2003-06-22 06:06:00 as well as adaware you could try spybot I find it more effective than adaware also check the properties for the internet connections. beama (111)
154013 2003-06-28 08:11:00 Thank you all for your help. I ran AdAware and it rooted out most of the trouble so then I downloaded SpyBot and ran that. That got rid of another 150 items and the problem seems to have gone away. Chief offender was a nasty little program from Hotbar.com that enticed me to download it by promising to give me all sorts of graphics and emoticans for my emails. Very hard to get rid of, no uninstal program and when one tries to remove the files, access is denied. I had to reboot in safe mode to get rid of them. Watermark (4063)
