153960 2003-06-21 04:00:00 Hi
Im wanting to set one of my computers up with a remote control, but im having problems. No one in NZ seems to sell the pre-built ones like www.evation.com Is there anyone that does ?

If there isnt can you use a IrDA from DSE and then install software to program it ?

I would build one like this www.manoweb.com but my skills at that sort of thing are very bad.

153961 2003-06-21 04:09:00 Is this to control the computer, or for the computer to control other things?

The irDA protocol is supported in W98+ I think; I downloaded the irDA driver for W95 recently .

The plugin units I have are made by HP as addons for some of their printers . I've seen a Compaq with the appropiate connector (miniDIN 8) on the back panel .

I think there are construction projects in some of the magazines to connect to a serial port .

One problem I've come across is limited range . The diode on my Palm seems to be good for about a metre . So the Omni Remote programme isn't really worth the trouble of training it . :D

153962 2003-06-21 06:19:00 This is to control the computer. Just like how you use your remote control with your TV/ etc.
There are packages in the US which supply the remote and the IR receiver. No one seems to have them in NZ.
I guess i should just try building one first. From what ive read the hard part is programing the chip. :/

most parts you can get from Jaycar or dse. I'm in the process of making one at the moment as well.

its for LIRC, but will work for anything else. look for WinLIRC too.

153964 2003-06-21 09:20:00 damn i'm stupid, didn't read the post properly, anyways, the irDA from dse isn't that great except for cellphones. the serial one is best. Try making one, its not toooo bad!!!
