154098 2003-06-21 23:45:00 The motherboard will be fried only if you had a big surge through it, but most good modern PSUs will take the surge themselves and get fried but save the components. If you wanted to be sure, you could get a new PSU, but it shouldn't have been affected. wintertide (1306)
154099 2003-06-21 23:47:00 Hmm ok well my psu is fried, I tried turning it on again and it doesn't work so let me recap on what you've said on what I need

New Psu ( Will try to get higher wattage if possible )
2 Fans for back where the grills are
Clock down graphics card in bios or with utility that comes with if possible to 4x agp.

That it?

154100 2003-06-21 23:51:00 Yep, that sounds right. If you have no problem with the card after a while, try stepping it back up to 8x AGP and see if it still runs fine. Make sure that you have one fan at the front and one fan at the back, or else you'll just put more pressure on your system (you always need one intake fan for every exhaust fan) wintertide (1306)
154101 2003-06-21 23:52:00 If your monitor doesn't power doesn't come from the PSU (ie the power comes from the wall and not the computer itself) then a 300w psu will be fine indeed.

Cooling should also not be a problem. a p1.4 with a standard cooling installation + a few drives and a graphics card should not result in the case overheating. Sounds more like you had a power surge causing the meltdown.

Indeed the card should/would drop back to 4x. AGP 4x and 8x both run at 1.5v so this shouldn't have blown either.

Since your dad works in a computer shop there will be no harm in installing some fans (i'd say only 1 so that its not too loud).

It is possible that your motherboard is fried but you won't know untill you install the new psu.

154102 2003-06-21 23:53:00 Only one fan? I'm positive you need two - one to take in cold air and one to take out hot air wintertide (1306)
154103 2003-06-21 23:53:00 oh god....

So do you agree with like me getting 2 fans a new power supply and clocking the graphics down? Think that'll do it?
Kibito (623)
154104 2003-06-21 23:56:00 Yep, should work. As roofus said, you may need a new motherboard if the old one got fried (and maybe a new processor). wintertide (1306)
154105 2003-06-21 23:58:00 Oh dear. :-(

I hope it doesn't come to that.

Fingers crossed till monday.

154106 2003-06-22 00:00:00 Yep only 1 fan. Today modders stick fans in there computers for 2 reasons. 1. they are geeks 2. they overclock.

If your not overclocking then there is generally no need to have extra fans in your computer.
I run an AMD 1800+ (AMD in general run hot) i have a standard fan on it with a psu with only the intake fan on it (not with the recommended fan that blows over the cpu as well) and my computer doesn't get hotter than 40 degrees. and take into account that a point of failure is around 110 degrees, i've got quite a lot of le way.

Kibito. the graphics will clock down by themselves. to double check go into your bios and set the AGP to run at 4x. that will fix that problem. Get the fans if you want, yes it brings extra security but its at the price of extra noise and IMHO your pc doesn't require it. Replace your psu with a quality 300w and you'll be away laughing. (as long as your m/board isn't already fried)

154107 2003-06-22 00:08:00 i assume you mean the cap that burst was on the motherboard. there was a few that had those dodgy caps. send it back to manafacture for replacement. depending on what cap burst the cpu may be fine. tweak'e (174)
