| 154122 | 2003-06-22 02:36:00 | hi, Further to my last posting, and following on from the relatively pain free and successful installation of Mandrake on my main machine, I thought to rejuvenate an old compaq with a cyrix 166 processer. Unfortunately Mandrake wont install as it says it cant work around a problem caused by the cpu's virtual DMA protocol. Can anyone advise whether or not it is possible to install Mandrake 9.1 on this machine and if so how to go about it. Thanks , Alan |

If Mandrake say they can't, they probably can't. ;D At the time that Cyrix and other non-Intel Pentium manufacturers were proliferating, the Linux people worked on making them work. If a fix had been done for this chip, it would be there. Try an older version ... perhaps another distrib which has a non-Pentium build. It will run a bit slower (or infinitely faster than not at all :D) because it won't use the Pentium-only instructions, but it would be quite usable. |
