153971 2003-06-21 03:43:00 My friend's computer is 20gb.IF I use partition magic to divide her hardrive to different bits and make each drive a letter. For example.C drive 2gb thats for windows only. D drive will be for cd rom drive.E drive is 3gb for mp3s.Thats it.Now If i was to format the computer since the hardrive orginated as 1 20gb hardrive would it erase all my friend's mp3s?
She has a windows registry error on her computer badly damaged windows.I want to format her computer but she doesn't want to lose her mp3s.Since she has like 1000 mp3s it'll take forever to put it on cd since the cd writer is 4x4x6x.using partition magic can divide the hardrive but since the hardrive was originated as one 20gb hardrive. It would erase everything wouldn't it?

How much free space is there on the hard disk? If there is enough to put all the MP3s on , you will probably be OK. Make sure the disk is defragged, so the data are all down to the front of the disk. Scandisk, and make sure there are no problems with the disk. Use Partion Magic to split the disk, with the top end being your new E drive. Format E, only. Copy all the MP3s to E from C, check that they copied correctly, and you should then be OK to format the C partition .

If the disk is "full" I think you'ld be in more danger of violence from your friend. :D

These rules are always true: Partitioning is dangerous.:O People make mistakes. :_| Programmes have bugs. :O Backups are Good Things. :D

153973 2003-06-21 04:09:00 o my friends got enough free space alright.Shes got like 17 gb left.Just wanted to know if it works.Thanks.Hmm I do get a fuzzy feeling that.Once formatting the hardrive is complete the partiton would be wiped out yingxuan (3330)
153974 2003-06-21 04:24:00 No - once formatted, they are treated as seperate drives. Thank goodness.
I just installed a second HD for back up, and while messing around did a format C instead of D. Sure wiped that clean, but left the E partition OK. Lucky that I use Nero HD back-up onto CD's every 2 weeks or so, so no problem restoring the C partition.

Not quite, formatting will only wipeout any data on the particular partition you are currently formatting. You do have to format the new partition before you are able to use it tho.

Do as Graham says and copy the MP3's to the new partition that you are going to create and then you can go to town on the C: drive

153976 2003-06-21 08:10:00 On the other hand yingxuan, If the mp3's are important for your friend, and you are worried that messing with the hard drive may loose them, then it could be worth backing/up to CD-R discs.

It may not be the hassle that you think. She has about 1000 mp3's.. At about approx 3Mb per song that totals about 3 or 4 Gb of data. Even with the 4x write drive, it should only take about 5 or 6 cd-r discs for about 2 hours. Not a big problem.

Maybe an option for you, before diving into the hard drive.

Goodluck.

153977 2003-06-21 10:04:00 Heres what you need to do.

Use partition magic, to make the 20gig partition smaller. It won't delete anything, pm is very good at that,

Now with the 4gig of unused space you have, make a new partition of 4gig with the file format of fat32 or ntfs. Put it at the end of the drive probably best.

Now boot into windows, and copy all your friends mp3s into the new partiton. They will be safe from carnage there :)\

Now format your c: drive, and reinstall windows.

A search on the forum will provide ample information.
