153916 2003-06-21 02:03:00 Hello everyone

I recently have upgraded my 256SD ram to a 512DDR ram . Ever since then I find my self having to restart my comp more than 10X a day . . . . Programmes and games freezes for no special reasons . I heard that Win9X doesn't run very well with anything over 256 ram . . . . is that true? I've been thinking about upgrading to Win Xp Pro, but I just don't like how everything set out . I know how to change the layout back to Win98 or 2000 etc in Xp . . . but then many of my games won't be able to run .

So any suggestions?

My comp spec: 1 . 3 ghz Duron, FSB 200mhz, K7VM2 (asrock), 512DDR333 (but only runs at 266 cause of my mainboard), 40Gig HD 5200rpm and Win98Se .

Thanks alot ^^

153917 2003-06-21 02:34:00 I dont think win98 makes very good use of that much ram but i dont believe it would make the machine unstable.

Id say its either a bad stick or its clashing with your existing ram.Try alternating the sticks,if she runs sweet with the new stick by itself then it may just not like working in with the older stick.

If shes unstabe with just the new stick in then return it asap, shes a dud.

153918 2003-06-21 05:04:00 The memory stick is on its own . My mainboard won't boot up if I had SD and DDR stuck in together . I've tried both slot for my DDR but still my programmes and games freezes at random time . Would a refomate help?

Thanks for advice, more would be pleased ^^ .

153919 2003-06-21 05:37:00 return the memory and if a new stick does the same thing stick to standard ram kiwibeat (304)
153920 2003-06-21 05:48:00 ahhh,seems i didn't read the details well enough.

Ive used dual-ram boards before and have never needed to format after swapping over to ddr.

I would recomend returning the ram and getting a replacement.

153921 2003-06-21 06:59:00 I've found similar with my two computers.

One started having problems when I increased it from 256mb to 320mb sdram (128+128+64). The other has always has a single 512mb ddr.

I noticed it was always when the disk cache had grown very large, so I limited it to 256mb [post back if you need instructions]. Problem solved.

I know its not the ram, because I've run memtest86 on both systems. Plus linux ran without problems on both, even when it allocated a large disk cache.

153922 2003-06-21 07:52:00 I would wanna replace this stick with another, just to see if its the stick problem . But a friend kinda brought this for me so I don't have the receipt for it .

To bmason
Umm, I don't know much about disk cache and stuff but what you are saying might help . If you don't mind, could you send me some instructions? ^^

Thanks again for the advices from everyone ^^
