153756 2003-06-20 04:41:00 Just a short note to say that I was recently suffering from very bad

boot times. Nortons would take like 3 minutes to load up in my sys tray

when restarting, starting my PC. I had heard these horror stories about

XP service pack 1 slowing down PC's to snail pace after being installed

but had never struck it myself on this PC with previous XP installs or

my other PC (900duron) But my hard drive is getting full and thought

this could be the cause, but still shouldn't have taken that long to

boot. I deleted heaps of stuff to give it 15% free so it could defrag,

which it completed fine. So today I uninstalled service pack 1 and

yeehaa back to a decent boot time, around 30 to 45 seconds. Aparently

the fix for the slowdowns after installing SP1 is only available

directly from MS. This is a legal install too but contacting microsoft

is to much mucking around at the moment. So uninstall SP1 if you are

having slow boot times can help. It seems to take a while to creep in

the slow down, like after a month or 2 of having SP1 installed.

Uninstalling SP1 has sorted my PC out. I never noticed anything

different in SP1 anyways. Security updates I suppose but I have a fire

wall and up to date anti virus so stuff it. I am never sticking that

**** SP1 onagain. A plain install from the XP disc does the job fine

anyway. And I have a straight install (no updates or service packs,

just drivers and programs)of XP pro with no updates on my compaq 900

duron gf4mx460 which runs really well and it is very stable and

performance is excellent. That PC is 18 months old and has been a real

gem. just glad it's got an AGP slot.
So there you go SP1 does slow down PC's and this may have happened to

me before but I have blamed it on something else and ended up

reinstalling windows. A fresh install and your PC just flies. But

install SP1 and down she goes. Nice one MS. I really like windows and

MS have done a good job with XP, but service pack one is a bit of a

stuff up

153757 2003-06-20 04:49:00 Hello valiantnz

I see you don’t all ready know this but Microsoft has fix that slows down problem in SP1

Microsoft has fixed that nasty Windows XP Update problem .

The "811493" security patch to fix a slowdown problem in Windows XP is now available through Windows Updates .

That is NOT true, you only need to run windows update & instal it & you have the patch! Simple

153759 2003-06-20 05:07:00 I use the hibernate function in xp and it starts up rather quickly from that. Icarus (3936)
153760 2003-06-20 05:16:00 Thank you stu, I only recently read that it was only available by ringing them but things move fast in the IT world, when they want to. There may have been no need to uninstall my SP1 today. It just seems crazy how I have to download a patch to fix a patch. (isn't SP1 like a giant patch and enhancement kit?).
I am starting to feel that if your PC runs OK with the plain install from the XP disc, just leave it be. Once the correct drivers are installed, as in my other machine, leave "well enough" alone. For me anyway.
As another PF1 member was saying, "we all fiddle and tweak and install fixes and patches and then blame MS or the PC for what are often our own mistakes, doings.
I am only a home user so I don't have confidential, valuable info, or a server that has to be super secure with all the latest security patches.
A good fire wall and Antivirus program should keep me well protected. no?
Or do the MS security fixes, hole plugs, close exploits, ways in, that a good fire wall and AV can't protect you from?
Is it really vital to install XP SP1 or should it be done only if the PC is having problems that can't be fixed by updating drivers or manually installing the paticular update, fix that you need?. (not as easy as it sounds to find the necessary hot fix, path required, hence SP1 I spose).
Before I unistalled SP1 it warned me by way of a list that most of my programs may not function after uninstalling SP1. Seems ok so far. I would of tried that fix if I had known it was able to be downloaded.
I may risk reinstalling SP1 if I run into any problems thatI can't sort, and will try the fix. But I will only do that if I run into to many programs not running because of the uninstall.
Anyway that enough of my opinion on the matter and cheers for the heads up on the fix being available stu1.

Yep you are correct there, you also need the patches /SP to keep your pc secure & also there are viruses which can disable your firewall and Antivirus program, & if that happens & you don’t have the patches then your pc will be open to all types of attacks etc…

Yep, you are sort of correct there .

> Is it really vital to install XP SP1

Yes it is, because the win XP SP1 fixes a few major security holes
See here . com/xpdite/xpdite . htm" target="_blank">grc . com for one of the big security holes which SP1 fixes & it contains some good enhancements etc . .
