154375 2003-06-23 04:20:00 I need to update my BIOS on a MSI P2 board .this needs to be done for a 40 GB HDD installation. but I have hit a problem the bios on the msi web site is not the one for the board when I try to flash it the flash program comes up with a error saying that the bios code or number in incorrect with the hardware. The board is a MSI model number MS 6117, ver 1.1 lx6, BIOS chip s/n 105002866, pci/pnp 686, Bios ver v4.51pg. Please can anyone help :)?

this is the download site

154376 2003-06-23 04:38:00 I see that some of those Bios updates have special notes beside them, EG: This is only for customers using 2MB bios., & This is only for 1MB bios.

Could it be you are trying to use the wrong update?
I have used one of those bios updates for the same board that my dad has in an old PC direct P2 -233mhz & it worked fine.
Not sure if it was the same revision as yours though.

Perhaps you could contact MSI support HERE (www.msicomputer.com.au)

154377 2003-06-23 04:46:00 thanks i have found a site with the board and number the same as mine

www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk

it said "The BIOS update will complain about the BIOS file part number not matching the machine type. If you continue, it works OK." well im doing more investigation on it and hope to resolve the issue soon where did you get your bios from ? the board is an old PC direct one .

thanks

154378 2003-06-23 05:58:00 Also check your motherboard carefully for the version number, and get the bios code at the bottom of the screen when it boots, as it describes
in the pages referenced below.

These 2 msi pages for AMI and Award BIOS should be read carefully:

AWARD BIOS (www.msi.com.tw)

AMI BIOS (www.msi.com.tw)
.....depending on which bIOS chip you have. There is also a manual for your board on that site if you dont have one.

Be very dubious about proceeding with flashing if it tells you it is the wrong version, else you may end up with a non bootable motherboard :(

154379 2003-06-23 06:05:00 Try this link (www.fujitsu-siemens.co.uk) for the fujitsu-siemens page.

I suppose it will be ok to follow their advice and go ahead and flash the bios then :)

154381 2003-06-23 09:12:00 Well, the other way to get large HDD support is to get a "dynamic overlay" software from the HDD manufacturers site. This puts a sort of bios onto the hard drive to enable large drive support.
It slows down the boot process just a little bit.
