154419 2003-06-22 23:17:00 Hi, Thanks for your help - in advance! I have so many problems happening at the moment, I'll list them for ease!

1 - IE often takes minutes (not moments) to open. Often will come up with Server not found. Other times, like now, it just popped up and dailed up without a hitch. (Monday am)

2 - The dial up connection sometimes doesn't come up at all and I have to go and find it in Start, Settings menu. (sporadic)

3 - The dial up line regularly drops out - no logic to it. Sometimes stays on for a couple of hours, next thing starts dropping out every 2 or 3 minutes. (Had a double adapter which I removed, also had cables running via a surge protector, which I removed and still the same)

4. Often, IE won't open a page, just sits there 1/2 opened - I think that often this is usually when the dial up connection freezes - see point 7, but I'm not certain.

5. If I try to click a link from a page it just sits there and says is Done, but still on original page. This is really annoying!

6. Takes ages to go 'back' if it gets there at all - again, just freezes or comes up with Page not found.

7. Dial up connection will often freeze - the time ticks over but there are no bytes moving at all. Can rarely get through a download

8. I have tried downloading IE6 from both website and from PC World CD but it will only go so far and then says unable to install.

9. Usually, Outlook Express is fine, but on some occasions it freezes, usually straight after downloading emails. Have to close and come back in.

The computer is 1000mhz, 128 ram, ME and has plenty of space. I've emptied Temp folders and run defrags, Norton Utilities etc.

I'm beginning to wonder if the dial up problems are a scheme of Telecom's to convince us to join Jetstream which has just arrived in our area a couple of months ago, coincidentally when these problems started.... Hmm.....

AGain, Thanks for your help!'
Cheers

154422 2003-06-23 01:31:00 Hi
I think I'm using IE 5.5 but I'm not sure - don't know where to find out what version. By the way, when I say 'minutes' to open, I mean 4 or 5 minutes - and my home page is the very simple Google Search. It never used to take so long.

Yes, I've cleaned out Temps, Cookies, Temporary Internet Files - I do this as regular 'housekeeping'.

Have been online this morning since 9.00 am and not a single problem!

Any ideas are much appreciated........

Cheers

154423 2003-06-23 01:35:00 Oops! Forgot to answer your questions. What is SP2? Also, don't know about trying to repair, so no, haven't tried that.

Just had the problem now - I tried to click the Reply link and it all just stops - the dial up keeps ticking over the time but no bytes. Have discovered I can get all moving again by clicking send/receive in Outlook Express. It sure is annoying.

154426 2003-06-24 01:09:00 We have just had the same experience - and even dropped our ISP because we thought it was their end causing the problem - it turned out to be a faulty connection where the cable terminates on the building. The random nature of the dropped modem line, the constant readjusting the transmission speed all slowed eveything to a crawl. Hope this takes away some of the blame from the PC and also works for you. We have to pay for local calls here and it was therefore a quite expensive problem. petermiller (4076)
