2003-06-22 11:47:00 | I may be wasting everyones time, but: ... Is it at all possible to configure a Cisco 801 ISDN Router to run on a normal phone line - possibly by plugging a 56k modem - therefore allowing a small LAN to access the internet through one portal. Maybe quite impossible - just checking to see whats out there. cheers Brian B)

2003-06-22 22:28:00 | I would be very suprised if it worked as the ISDN router will be looking for a digital connection, not an analogue one.Unless it has dual inputs, one digital, one analogue. Peter

2003-06-23 04:09:00 | Most Cisco routers have an RS232 port for console. I believe it's possible to hang a modem on that, and configure the router to use that as the WAN port, and disable the ISDN channel It's sometimes a RJ12 (? ... the 6 pin telephone style) but the pinout is available without too much searching in Google, and it's easy to make a cable. Whether it's worth it ...

Some Cisco routers (for SOHO) have two inputs, Digital and analougue; unfortunately this has only the digital. To Graham: >Most Cisco routers have an RS232 port for console. This has a RJ45 port for console (the main reason that I bought it) could it be possible to hang a modem from that ? cheers Brian B) |

2003-06-24 03:03:00 | I think I can give you a definite "maybe" . :D In google, use "cisco console pinout" and use the link to "www . alliancedata . com/ . . . . " . That will show you the connections available . Then either in google "using cisco router modem" will find you more informatiion, and/or direct to the horse's mouth ( . cisco . com/warp/public/76 . 9 . html" target="_blank">www . cisco . com) wsill give you some ideas of what you can do . Cisco seem to assume that this is mostly for adminsitratiion of the router through the console, and there are limits to what a "console" port (rather than an "aux" port) can do . . . I have a strong idea that it will be possible . But the configuration might be "interesting" . Have you got the Cisco documentation CD? It's all online, and I have sometimes considered downloading bits of it (or even individual PDF manuals . . . which tend to be around 1000 pages each :D) . I've got a number of Cisco routers, but they are "bigger" and older than yours . I just play with them .
