| 154201 | 2003-06-22 05:36:00 | Hi Everyone OK, yesterday I installed Mandrake Linux 9 . 1 onto my laptop (OK installing Linux on a Saturday yes I'm a geek) This was a fresh install and the hard drive was completely formatted . This is my first Linux install, and I'm stuck on what must be a really simple thing . How do you login as root while running the GUI??? When it powers up I'm only given the choice of logging in as my user, but when I try and run Userconf or Netconf it says "you must be root to access linuxconf" Other apps like Userdrake ask me for the root password . I think this will be the start of a number of posts about this install ;) Cheers Marshell |

| 154202 | 2003-06-22 05:53:00 | Im not too sure about logging in as root, as I only use RedHat which by default will let you choose to log in as root or not (Typed names, not pic's), but... You can open up a terminal session and type: su - This will prompt you for your root password, and from there you can run programs as root, including linuxconf! | 154203 | 2003-06-22 05:56:00 | if I remember correctly when you did a the install one of the steps was to create a root password or supervisor password. To logon as root user on the GUI logon simply type in "root" and the password you set on install WARNING be careful when logged in as root as you can do some nasty things to the OS some unrecoverable, especially if are new and learning linux ( only fix reinstall) I learned this from experience. It has been a while since I have installed and used linux. Keep watching this space there are more knowledgeable people out there that contribute to this forum |

| 154206 | 2003-06-25 11:38:00 | Go to Start -> Configuration -> KDE -> System -> Login Manager . Then under the "Users" tab, uncheck root as a hidden user . Logout and you will be given the option of logging in as root from now on . It's a bit of a hidden option but very useful once you've done it . Good luck with Mandrake 9 . 1 :) |
