154174 2003-06-23 08:14:00 Are all Power Supplys the same size?? Like if I get a new one it will fit in my case nicely?? I'll open it up again and find out the size in cm. :p

How much are 8mb cache drives? They sound nice. Is there much point getting one of them when better sata drives are not far off??

My computer was ata100 when I bought it. Is that related to the transfer amount the motherboard can handle? Or the transfer amount the hard drive can do??

Does ata100 mean, 100 megabytes a sec, or Megabits? Cheers :)

No you'll need to check that you can fit the new one into your case and clear the cpu, slots, etc. You can probably adapt the fixing holes if they dont't line up, if your that way inclined.

154177 2003-06-23 10:02:00 Power Supply Dimensions:

13.8cm horizontal X 14.8cm height X 8.2cm depth

The first 2 sizes, cant really get any bigger because there are stoppers on the case. Well maybe they are brackets to hold it steady, I don't know.

The last dimension 8.2cm, is the depth. It could go to a max of 10.5cm, which would be the end of the space inside the case. In fact at 10.5cm you would be getting pretty close to the top of the cpu fan.

Sound like the drive I need? Pricespy can't find drives by their model numbers.

I think its the best 80Gb, ata drive Seagate have?

154179 2003-06-24 01:09:00 I've just read a few articles in the March 2003 NZPC World Mag, and it seems the Western Digital WD800JB looks like the best bet.

It has 8mb of cache, 80Gb, 7200rpm, ultraATA 100, 8.9ms seek time.

Anything wrong with western digital drives? They don't crash or anything do they? Best place to buy? :)

*Hey look, I think I'm talking to myself* *where is everybody* hahaha

154180 2003-06-24 01:34:00 Hi PW.

I don't have any experience with the WD drives bad or otherwise but, theyre ok by all accounts. Shop around, pricespy is always my first port of call. If youre buying other bits and pieces I find its easier to stick to one shop with overall good prices and service.

If want quete, go with the Seagate, I can only just hear the very faintest sound coming from mine and then only if I press my ear to the case.

154181 2003-06-24 02:53:00 Try searching on pricespy for western digital anything. It will bring up 15pages of non- hard drive related stuff! argh! PoWa (203)

154183 2003-06-24 12:53:00 Right having done some extensive pricespying :)

I have decided that it is cheaper to buy a 120gb with 8mb cache drive than a 80gb with 8Mb cache.

I looked at two ones:

Barracuda 7200.7 (www.seagate.com)
Model: ST3120026A
120Gb
7200rpm
seek 8.5ms
8Mb Cache
$233 Cheapest price from Paradigm Pc's (http://www.pp.co.nz/). Has anyone bought anything from these guys?? They are new? I want to know I wont get ripped off? Also if you can find me somewhere I can get this model cheaper? Tell me please :)

Western Digital
Model: WD800JB
80Gb
7200rpm
8.9ms seek.
$198.00 from Dragon PC (http://www.dragonpc.co.nz) -Looks like a real dodgy dealer!? Has anyone dealt with them?
Price Spy search results (www.pricespy.co.nz). The next dealers up from them go to TasTech computers, but their price is $200. For an extra 33$ I can get another 40Gb space and possibly a quieter drive!?

I looked at ETC computers (http://www.etccomputers.co.nz) someone mentioned earlier, and their website aint up to scratch. Not enough detail about the hard drives to make an informed decision about what they are actually selling!

Comments?!
