154686 2003-06-24 05:11:00 Hi,

We've just set-up disk mirroring in Windows 2000.
I was if anyone knows what the difference is performance of Hardware Raid vs software raid (using ATA disk on seperate cables). RAID 0 or 1.

Thanks
Nic

154687 2003-06-24 05:53:00 Raid 0, utilizes data striping and has the fastest read/write time and most efficient data storage. Every disk in the array is used in parallel to read and write data. However it does not utilize any form of data redundancy or stripe error correction a failure in any of the hard disks will corrupt your data e.g. if you have 2 disks and one fails you lose the data on the disk. Also all the space on the disks are used for data storage.

Raid 1 on the other hand, every time you write something to the disk it writes it to both(if you have two) so no speed is gained from writing data. Reading though is done in parallel so you will get speed increases from reading of the disk only. So effectively each disk is a copy of the other (if you have two), meaning if one fails you will not lose your data. This means that if you have 2 disks in a raid-1 configuration the total disk size is only as big as a single disk.

So performance is best with raid-0 but not good if you have critical data stored on the disk. Raid-1 is good if you don't need the speed increase in writing as much as you do in reading from the disk, also critical data will not be lost when a disk fails.

154688 2003-06-24 06:59:00 I read an article not too long ago which compared them and found that the windows software raid was as quick as a cheapish RAID card. Only problem is that you can't install windows on to a windows raid. -=JM=- (16)
154689 2003-06-24 07:14:00 Because it has to load the drivers to use the raid configuration first hence you can't load windows onto the raid configuration. So the bios will assume its a normal hard disk and try to read it as such. rsnic (3780)

You can mirror a system drive in 2000 Server.
