154667 2003-06-24 05:17:00 You'll find that it does quickly slow down. You can try running defrag s/w once a week. You can also go into control panel / system / {environment} / performance. {I'm not quite sure on the complete path at the moment since I'm currently on an NT machine}.

Programs such Norton system tools can clear out invalid registry settings etc. PC world have a raft of ideas to help speed up XP in a back issue - so have a look on the web site, or hunt through your old copies...

Hope this at least helps a wee bit.

I am guessing you have run windows update & you have win XP SP 1

If you do have Win XP SP1 have a read of this:

154669 2003-06-24 05:47:00 Those were really useful responses, Nic and Stu.

I've just obtained (finally) XP pro - do the same slow-down problems occur with this version?

154671 2003-06-24 06:14:00 Please Note:

You MAY experience a slow-down, not you WILL experience a slow-down.

On 4 PC's here, SP1 and subsequent updates have NOT induced any slow down.

Directories with large numbers of files do cause a slow-down effect in my opinion and experience however, which is likely often the reason Windows goes "faster" after a reformat and install.

I understood that the large directories issue applies even to win 9.x - the recommendation is that your root directory shouldn't be overloaded, but any number of subs is ok. Numbers of files is irrelevant, unless I misunderstood?

154673 2003-06-24 08:28:00 Two sites that I find excellent for tweaking Win XP are at Extreme Tech (www.extremetech.com) and Tweak XP (www.tweakxp.com). tommy (2826)
154674 2003-06-24 12:15:00 I have Widows ME & XP home on the same machine.
ME is faster on the computer & online.
ME is compatable with most software. XP has to be tweaked to accept some software.

The only good thing about XP Home is that it is stable when multi tasking.
I find that I use ME most of the time. It has never had a patch or update & is very reliable, for me anyway :-)
