| 154540 | 2003-06-25 08:24:00 | powa- yes its legal however a lot of recovery disks simply won't work on another pc. why do you think MS started doing that for ;-) | tweak'e (174) | ||
| 154541 | 2003-06-25 13:22:00 | >* CD Media which are often called recovery CDs. This is a CD or DVD clearly marked with the PC Manufacturers brand that can only be used on the PC you purchased. The media will be included as part of the materials you received at the time of purchase and will include all files necessary to restore the operating system on the PC. Suck on that. |

| 154543 | 2003-06-25 13:40:00 | It's simply not legal to sell an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) copy of Windows, unless you are selling it with the PC that it was originally sold with. It is licenced for that PC only, and the licence is non transferrable. Thats why OEM software is much cheaper than off-the-shelf versions. "Brand Name" recovery CD's are keyed to the BIOS or similar, and will not work in othr PC's Read the EULA.... |

Whether you can install from a recovery CD to another comp, I don't know . I was under the impression that some Manufacturers put info on a hidden parition that would only work with their CD, but I would acept education on this point . What if you flashed the BIOS if the method mentioned earlier is used, would you be up the creek? Which kinda brings me to "Trusted Computing" where various bits of the hardware are identified by the software and visa versa, that can/will identify the comp/you and certain activities to the various stakeholders involved in putting together your computing experience . Its supposedly to assist with activation, anti-piracy, anti-P2P, secure online purchase (with trusted entities), manufacturers/developers security, etc . Thats a step up from prduct activation and locking a recovery CD into a certain Bios or HDD . Or have I got the wrong end of the stick here folks ?:| Cheers Murray P |
