155253 2003-06-26 05:47:00 Hi. I have 2 laptops and 1 desktop networked via a switch running at 100 Mbps. When I copy files two and from the laptops the speed is fine but when I copy from the desktop it is very slow.
I have replaced all the Cat 5 cables and replace the switch with a hub but no joy. I also replaced the network card in the desktop. I tried different settings for the network card speed.
I can copy files from using one of the laptops from the desktop but when I use the desktop to copy or send files to one of the laptops it goes very slow still.

The desktop is using W2K as is one of the laptops, the other laptop is running W98

Any Ideas?

155254 2003-06-26 05:52:00 Could be the HDD speed on the Desktop? How old is the HDD? Chilling_Silently (228)
155255 2003-06-26 06:01:00 The Hard Drive is 2 years old.
I am sure it is the network spped that is slow as I can see the sent and recieved byte numbers on the task bar and the only change very slowly.
The desktop performs well except when it is sending or receiving files over the network

155256 2003-06-26 06:08:00 check the mtu/rwin values. has it been tweaked for the internet?

what speed is pc sending/receiving at ??

what protocol are you useing for the network?

155257 2003-06-26 07:20:00 You replaced the switch with a hub!? Put the switch back in, they are better.

Are you sharing the internet between the two pcs?

155258 2003-06-26 22:21:00 Apologies for the dim nature of this reply, but I am not very good on networking - I have it all working now, but live in fear it will fall over and I will have to find out how to set it up again. However, this may jog the minds of those who know what they are talking about.

I had a similar problem with one slow computer on the network, and I was told that it was possible that the computer did not know which gateway to use - it was seeking the internet first to find the other networked computers. It then waited each time until that failed and then tried the other addresses one after another. Something like that anyway!!!

Sorry to be so vague, but I was told to ensure that the default gateway was set up correctly for all computers, or something like that?

I remember upgrading from a hub to a switch in an attempt to solve the problem, and it did nothing at all to speed up the slow one - clearly the problem was with the settings not the hardware in my case (and my hard disks were both the slower speed type at the time as well).

Does that vague saga rings bells with any of the networking experts?

155259 2003-06-26 23:43:00 The first step would be to run a network monitor (it's a good thing you have a hub ... you'll be able to see all the traffic ... but once it's fixed, go back to the switch). If there's a lot of "chatter", there's something wrong. There are lots of free monitors around ... someone will recommend one which is good in Windows. I use tcpdump on Linux.

Gateway addresses won't apply ... this is a local network, and gateways are "ways of reaching other networks". It could be a lack of IP resolution ...try making a hosts file for each computer. (or checking the hosts files you have).

Now that rings a bell Graham. As I indicated, both my knowledge and memory are faulty on networking but this sounds right - I know I reset the IP addresses at that time, as well as clarifying on all computers the address of the default gateway.

I apologise if I have misled, but hopefully it has provoked a useful way forward.

155261 2003-07-03 11:42:00 Thank you Tweak'e, you have fixed my problem. I downloaded a copy of Modem Booster and PC Booster and this must have changed my TCP/IP
settings. I used PC Booster to manual edit the MTU and RWIN values and the problem is solved.
Well done.

155262 2003-07-03 11:51:00 thats one of the reasons i try to not use tcp/ip for windows fileshareing. tweak'e (174)
