155060 2003-06-25 12:17:00 Short question - where can I get a replacement fan for a video card, pref in Auckland?

After an exhaustive upgrade from Win 98 to XP pro, I've noticed what may be a contributing factor to the dramas I've recently had...

... while I had the tower case on its side during a re-boot I noticed that the fan on the bottom of the vid card wasn't turning. I took it off, and wow - it's very flimsy, and see that its running off centre on the spindle, when it actually runs.

IS there someone in NZ that sells a replacement fan that would mount on my card?

Card = 3D Prophet DDR-DVI 32 meg (GForce)

Thx.

(geez I dislike the XP GUI!)

155062 2003-06-25 12:52:00 You can actually change the Xp GUI to look exactly like Windows 98 if you want... turn off themes (which makes the performance suck anyway), and display the start menu in it's clasic view as a start... nicnz (2273)
155063 2003-06-26 06:06:00 Hi,
Ive replaced my graphics cards fan.
Have not looked up what size yours is but by the age of it it may be a 4cm one. Fans also come in 8 and 12cm I think.
You will need to look on the card.
It was difficult to find a 4cm one as all new boards have much larger fans. The local shop didn't/couldn't get any. The only place I could find was Dick Smiths.
Had no plug on end but just cut the one off the dead fan and soldered it on.
Dead simple task.
Hope this helps.

155065 2003-06-26 07:12:00 You can get just about any fan size you want but, generally from 40mm to 50, 60, 80, 90 and 120. check the voltage rating first before purchasing. Whetu can source fans for you if your having trouble or hop over to www.trademe.co.nz (www.trademe.co.nz)

Some of the gfx card fans are 5v with tiny little 3 pin plugs so you might have to swap the one over from your existing fan to keep your fan speed monitoring going.

155066 2003-06-26 07:51:00 I assume this is your card:
. computerandvideogames . com/t/info/pc/hercules3dprophetddr/dvi/id2719/" target="_blank">www . computerandvideogames . com
?

Overclockers . co . nz is a dealer/wholesaler . . you can get their gear cheaper through enthusiast retailers such as stylespc . com or novapcpower . com

I doubt you'd need much to cool your video card, with a bit of effort a large passive heatsink would be fine . . .

Realistically the Zalman gear from ocnz would be overkill for your card . . you should only get it if you are after silence . . if the humming doesnt bother you then just get this laughable cooler from DSE:
. dse . co . nz/cgi-bin/dse . storefront/3efa969b01bf21dc2740c0a87f99073a/Product/View/XH6436" target="_blank">www . dse . co . nz

(cat number: XH6436 if the link doesnt work)

it'll be far better matched to your video card

155067 2003-06-26 08:51:00 Greg, stay away from the GPU cooler Whetu has reconmended, its uses a thermal adhesive(crap one at that, have used this particular cooler and it fell off my Geforce 2MX). It doesnt have the pushpins to attach it so it wont be attached to the card very well.

Try a: Thermaltake Crystal Orb
www.thermaltake.com

this is the cooler i used once the one above fell off. It is solid as and uses push pins to attact itself to the GFX PCB. It comes with everything u need like thermal paste or adhesive. Its avaliable at most retailers, i brought mine at OEM Computers in Manakau
