154939 2003-06-25 01:10:00 My computer freezes during certain programs at seemingly random times, it is impossible to replicate or predict. Progies include: IE6, Red Alert2 (online gaming ), Visual Basic.

It is a complete freeze: screen is still up but no way out except to reboot. I've tried a number of options (see below) they still occur. I'm looking for suggestions, it drives me nuts. No particular time when it happens.

System:

Win 98
Athlon 1800XP
512 meg ram DDR RAM
2 x 4 gig HD's
K7 Master MS-6341 Mother board.
GeForce 2 graphics card
On board sound.
320 watt power supply

Heres what I've tried:
-2 x 256 meg name brand , different manufacturer, memory sticks, alone and together.

- Two types of video cards (GeForce two and Intell 740)

-Extra cooling on the video card

-Upgrade sound and video drivers and install DirectX 9

-Defrag, Disk Scan etc.

-Installing a window in the side of the computer (still freezes but the lights are pretty).

Does anyone have any idea what the heck is going on in there? I know its a needle in a haystack, but heres hoping.

154940 2003-06-25 01:22:00 Maybe you've got too many progs running. Tried checking in msconfig to see what's starting up when you boot? :) mark c (247)
154941 2003-06-25 01:27:00 Try getting the latest drivers and bios updates if you don't already have them.

154942 2003-06-25 01:29:00 link doesn't work, copy and paste this in
"www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=93%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20% 20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20&NAME=MS-6341"

154943 2003-06-25 01:31:00 That doesn't work either, go to www.msi.com.tw, click the motherboard link, then under archives find your model. rsnic (3780)
154944 2003-06-25 01:57:00 Will do. I'm on the trail. I turned off a bunch of startup programs, see if that helps. Found a good site that suggested a couple could cause trouble.

www.pacs-portal.co.uk

Off to the mobo site next.

Cheers, keep up the ideas. Trouble is I may never know which one worked!

154945 2003-06-25 02:46:00 The other thing to try in these situations is to go into the cmos setup of the BIOS, and load the default settings. It's just possible that some of the settings are tweaked up a bit too much and are causing timing problems and freezes. Terry Porritt (14)
154946 2003-06-25 03:52:00 Well I was going well until the BIOS update . Went there, did everything, followed instructions to the letter and the BIOS is now dead! :(

According to the instructions if you have problems go to another website . I went there, the two options failed, I'm now in the third "Get a new BIOS chip" .

Now that sucked! I rang the supplier "Oh, it very dangerous to update BIOS" . Tell me about it . And "We don't have chip, we can sell you a new motherboard"!

Anyway I can see the humour, and thanks for all the help guys . At least an occasional freeze won't be a problem any more .

As an aside, while trawling the motherboard site in the vain hope of assistance came across a warning "Do not try to update BIOS from a floppy" which is exactly what the readme file told me to do .

You gotta love computers . Wait till my wife gets home . . . . . . . :(

154947 2003-06-25 05:08:00 Sorry about that Ferg. Should have warned you. Updating the bios from a floppy is alright but if the floppy has some bad sectors on it, bad news. I presume that was the case. rsnic (3780)
154948 2003-06-25 05:26:00 Have you tried resetting or shorting the cmos. Never done it myself but it may tell you in your manual. I'm not talking about settining defaults in your bios but shorting/discharging the the chip itself. Look here (www.duxcw.com) & here (www.pcguide.com) plus here (www.badflash.com)
