155535 2003-06-27 01:55:00 I have a PC which is currently running Windows 98 SE. The computer was originally an HP Pavilion Package PC. I have since upgraded to an old MSI 6178 MB, PIII 700Mhz CPU and 128MB RAM.

Changing the motherboard was a breeze and Win98 detected all the correct devices and installed the drivers/software for it.

I didn't know if this was gonna work at all as it was one of HP Pavilion PC's which comes with those recovery CD thingy's.

I don't really care what happens in the future as far as software is concerned but I do want to keep the current software on the machine.

So having said all that if I install Windows 2000 Pro on this "HP Pavilion" PC will I lose all the software currently on it or will it remain intact after the install is completed.

Thanks for you help

155536 2003-06-27 02:11:00 back up all your data and format/install .

doing a clean install is far less troublesome . plus you will already have the old crap leftover from the motherboard swap and you will need to make sure your progs will run on w2k .

as far as the HP software goes i would be inclinde to throw it out as you will nolonger be able to use the restore disks .

155537 2003-06-27 03:19:00 Dual boot it for awhile if you don't want to go cold turkey. Win2k gives you the option to do this at setup. As tweak'e says, backup first tho. When youve migrated those apps that will work on 2k you can give 98 the heave-ho.
