2003-06-26 10:48:00 | I have got Windows ME on my computer and want to install Windows XP. What is the best way of installing XP, bearing in mind I do not want to lose any of the programs I already have installed on my computer. Can I install WinXP in tandem with WinME - ie: Will it set up its own partion, as I do not own a copy of PartionMagic. Computer Specs: PackardBell 733mhz, 20GB Harddrive, 256MB RaM Thanks for any help, Baldy

If you wanna send me a whistle on Psycho*_*Sabertooth*@*Hotmail*.... I can send you a few URL's that might help out... and offer some other advice.. like partitioning with Linux ;-) |

2003-06-27 03:00:00 | Hi Baldy. Good to see ya :D I installed win 2k pro over the top of win 98 and chose the option to choose the OS at start up. Basically a dual boot on the same partition, worked great, let me get the feel of 2k before I gave 98 the chop and preserved all my programs. I don't know for sure but, XP should do something similar. Cheers Murray P

2003-06-27 03:12:00 | Yes, Murray, you're right, but the problems arise when Win2K tries to install DirectX 6 (I think that's what it comes with) into the same spot as you had Direct X 8.1 in Win98.. Then you upgrade to DirectX 9 in Win2K, but dont do it immediately in Win98, then problems arise! In saying that, I used that method on two PC's for approx 6 months before I decided to format them both and set them up with the New O/S Properly :-) No email yet baldy?

2003-06-27 03:25:00 | Think you can get around that directX thing, can't you Chill? Didn't cause me any problems... will have to think on it......... ......... ow that hurts. Nope, went sweet as a nut, was expecting trouble but 2k seemed to handle everything as if it new what it was doing, with only the odd input from me. Cheers Murray P
