155336 2003-06-26 09:46:00 I need to share an internet connection between two computers running Win98 (not SE). Only Win98 SE and above can do this. Does anyone know a way I can share on 98 First Edition? abc6667 (4094)
155337 2003-06-26 09:59:00 I'm not too sure if Win98 first edition has ICS, but if my memory serves me well, it does.

On the computer you wish to "host" the internet connection, click Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
Windows Setup (tab)
Communication
Put a tick in Internet Connection Sharing and click OK, Ok, etc. You will be prompted for the Win98 setup files.
Reboot.
Now, I'm not too sure how to start ICS, but hopefully it will do it itself, and when you reboot, you will see a new icon in the system tray - that should be ICS.
This is all you need to do, however, for ease of use, you may wish to save your internet password if you haven't done so already.

On the computer you wish to access the net on (the client), click Start > Control Panel > Network
Click on TCP/IP >> **NIC NAME** and click Properties
On the DNS Setup tab click a few things (sorry I can't be more help), and then set your DNS Servers to your ISP's DNS Servers, and set the host to be the name of your machine sharing the internet - this is case sensitive!
On the Gateway tab, specify the IP Address of your "host" machine (the one sharing the net connection)
This should do it, you should be able to start up Internet Explorer on the client machine and when the host machine has connected to the internet, you should be able to access the internet..

Sorry it's a bit blotched in some area's though, hopefully someone will fine tune these..
Alternatively, read the Forum's Faq on Networking ;)

155340 2003-06-26 10:13:00 Apparently Kerio's WinRoute Lite can help?? Never looked into it though sorry, but you can download a 30 or so day trial from their website :-) Chilling_Silently (228)
155341 2003-06-26 10:13:00 either a proxy such as analogX or a ics type app such as sygate or wingate. tweak'e (174)
155342 2003-06-26 10:14:00 The first 98 doesn't have it.

You could try a proxy on the host like this one (www.analogx.com).

Its actually much simpler to get going anyway.

Well in that case, the easiest thing to do would be to find a free proxy server or gateway program. A gateway program would theoretically be easier to configure on the client side.

If you choose to go with a proxy (which is easier to find and usually free), then go into Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections
Click on Lan Settings
Put the tick in Use a Proxy Server for your Lan
Address: (host name of the machine sharing the internet connection)
Port: (port used by program - usually 8080)

You will have to do this for all programs including MSN, ICQ, etc. Bear in mind that some programs do not like connecting through a proxy server, and will generally try to make your life miserable in the process - this includes PING and TRACERT from MSDos...
