| 155296 | 2003-06-26 08:15:00 | can alternative power (generator &/or hydro-power affect the operation of a computer? If so, are there any recommendations? | NZHawk (4093) | ||

I would also buy a good quality power supply for the computer (the AC > DC converter) just to make sure you PC's getting enough juice. The most important thing is making sure the power supply is constant. |

Like most other sources of power, they enable you to run a computer :D On to your question, though, there is no reason why a generator or hydro-electric power should have a diminishing effect on the operation of a computer. One would assume you are operating close to one of these, and are experiencing problems? If not, please elaborate on your initial question, as it has no real description of what is needed besides reccommendations for power sources (in my opinion, any power source is good). |

| 155299 | 2003-06-26 08:27:00 | Can you be more specific? Are you talking of a RAPS system (Remote Area Power Supply), utilising non grid-connected generation systems? PCs firstly rectify the incoming 230v AC to DC, then use the DC in a switch-mode high frequency chopper circuit to drive a high efficiency, small core transformer to step the power down to the various voltages needed . Accordingly they dont care a lot about the exact incoming frequency, but they do care about any small "drop-outs" or dips in the incoming mains . These can cause the power to be lost for a few milliseconds, and the PC will crash . While using a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) could theoretically fix this, if the incoming power quality was that bad, the UPS would cut in most of the time, and its batteries would quickly become exhausted . On the other hand, an inverter supplied by solar panels should be quite stable . When the sun shines . |
