155388 2003-06-26 21:44:00 Sorry beetle for my reply (in advance),love reading your posts.
I've got to put some more poison out in the aviary this weekend for that very problem. :D
I'd go along with godfather's post,in my very limited experience. Is there any way all your problems are covered by warranty? Ie, taking it back to be fixed?
(And I do get help from your questions too.)

155389 2003-06-26 22:06:00 Ahh! Now your post re cats and mice (rats) becomes clear beetle :D

The rodent problem. Give it a ggod clean. Pop the bottom and remove the ball, wash in light detergent solution (especially importand if you roll your own, baky on the ball or rollers is murder ;) ). Unscrew the base or whatever holds it together and carefully lift the little board away (do it on a sheet of newspaper), brush or blow out the inside of the case with compressed air (you'll need a really fine haired brush) pay particular attention to the little cogged wheels to make sure nothing is caught in the cogs. Clean off the rollers with a cotton bud dipped in a small amount of alcohol, lighter fluid will prob be ok as well. Do a final check with a magnifying glass of the cogs and the lenses on the board to make sure no fluff or hair is getting in the way and reassemble. Happy mousing.

Reformatting would be pretty drastic to fix a mouse problem if the above doesn't work. I understand its not the only issue. Have you tried bootibg from your XP CD (and here I presume its similar to win 2k) and do a repair repair of system files. You can incrementally replace/renew files or do the lot in one hit. You can freshen up a system this way if its not on its very last legs, no harm done if your about to reformat and install anyway. Don't forget to back up. If you've used the windows update catelogue, you can save those files to backup as well.

155393 2003-06-27 03:31:00 Well done bettle. Very satisfying isn't it.

Formatting isn't hard to do its just what it does that can be the problem. Try the other options first, then, post back if they don't do the trick and we'll walk you through formatting and reinstall.

155395 2003-06-27 05:18:00 Something else you can try, borrow another mouse and see if you still have problems, if so it's not the mouse.
Might save you a lot of work. :-)
