155718 2003-06-28 00:16:00 I'm thinking about upgrading my computer in around november/december because by that time my computer will be celebrating its 1 and 1/2 year birthday :D.

I'm thinking about buying these components:

Asus A7V8X-X (VIA KT400/Socket 462 for Athlon XP/FSB 333MHz/ATA133/Internal LAN/6 PCI/3 DDR400 DIMM/AGP 8X/6 USB2.0)

--+Athlon XP 2200+
--+512mb RAM (DDR333, the motherboard supports DDR400 but it's just about a 5% raise of performance)
--+MSI GeforceFX 5200 T128 (if the prices go down on the video card...)
--+Sony CRX210A1 and Sony DDU1621 (A 48x12x48 cdrw and 16x48x dvd-rom)

I am currently using:

Gigabyte GA-72MMH (VIA KM133a/Socket A/FSB 200mhz)
Leadtek Geforce4 MX 440
256mb SDRAM
Ricoh 6x4x24x with 2x dvd combo

Hopefully I'll be able to get these components from somewhere in asia....would be cheaper if I got a friend to bring them here...Any suggestions, or better products I should add in?

It is much cheaper to get computer stuff from Asia like Taiwan, HK, S'pore etc . However, do have a thought about warranty issues . What if it's defective? I think, if the price difference is not much, it is better to get it locally . Generally, prices in Asia is about 30% cheaper than our local prices . More importantly, there are much more varieties and up-to-date stuff to choose from . Whereas in NZ, we have very limited choices .

As regards your upgrade, it all depends on your budget; with your current budget probably you can get much better specification from Asia . It really boils down to dollars and sense!

Anyway, there is still quite a long way to go (Nov/Dec) and computer parts prices are decreasing (generally) quite rapidly and new products are emerging every now and then . It maybe a little too early for you to persue the matter . Do your research two weeks before you are ready to go and probably you will get a more satisfactory result .

Cheers

Welcome to changing technology Becky. Depending on your usage needs for that computer, you generally do look at upgrading various components (if not all) after 18 months or so. If your PC is for emailing, surfing the net and using Word, then an upgrade will not be necessary for quite some time.

155722 2003-06-28 01:25:00 Thankyou Jen, I didn't think of it like that. I just thought you only upgraded old computers. The one he is trying to upgrade seems like a pretty good computer to me though twinkiewinkie (4091)
155723 2003-06-28 01:29:00 FX 5200 (or 5800) won't give you value over the MX. If you want gaming/video up the intenteded card spec' .
