155404 2003-06-26 12:19:00 I have a cable modem 'broadband' to my PC. Its great.
I would like to use a second PC off the same connection.
Any experience of this please?

Do You have a network card in each computer and have them connected to each other

Internet Connection Sharing (www.infinisource.com)

What OS, 98, ME, XP, Linux? The easiest way I have found is to use a switch then you don't have to muck around with ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) if your running a MS OS. So, you'll need 2 ethernet cards (1 for each pc), a 10/100 switch/hub (unless the modem has a built in one) enough cat 5 cable to connect the 2 PC's to the switch with RJ45 plugs on each end (ie, 2 lengths, straight thru not cross over, make sure the switch/hub has an uplink port).

Once you have that you'll be ready to delve into your network setting and TCP/IP. Basically you'll set the modems IP address as the gateway address on each of the computers and set DNS adresses for your ISP and each PC will have its own IP address (IMHO thats better than using DHCP for 2 or 3 comps) and you'll also need to set uo a subnet mask like 255.255.255.0

If that all sounds a bit much, its not too bad once you get into it. As stated before have a look at the FAQ and a few sites, get your gear ready and then if you have doubts, post back here for help. I've foun this site (www.wown.com) very good but its down at the mo so try tomorrow

Cable modem can also be connected to USB as was mine & my neighbours .
In my situation I put a network card in both PCs & used a crossover cable .
My main PC is running Win XP pro & I use internet connection sharing for the 2nd PC which is running Win 98SE .
This setup is cheap & easy to setup using the wizard on XP .

The only downside is that the Main pc has to be running in order for 2nd PC to be able to access the net,No biggie tho when both PCs are in arms reach of each other .
On the upside,You as the user of the main computer have control over the 2nd PCs access to the net .
Useful if you have kids that like downloading heaps .

155409 2003-06-26 21:32:00 Didn't see tha Derby bit last night, looked for the area?? :8} Teach me to answer without all the facts . Need to know the OS and tad more info re hardware .

If its ethernet (not USB) it'll require 2 ethernet cards in the in the gateway PC, IMHO is easier to go with a switch and not much more cost wise plus, the bonus of easy expandibilty later if needs be .
