156009 2003-06-29 01:29:00 win 98 - heaps of drive space/ram - system runs perfectly till connecting then it takes an age to get anywhere, - connect using "communicator 4.7" - like over 3 mins to get on "pressF1" - even backing out is a mission - only new download was "zone alarm" but have since dumped it but that didn't seem to have any effect - re-installed "communicator", defragged - funnily enough it works fine if i open with "netscape" - this is weird! - can anyone help? - like i'd like to keep using "communicator""cause we're familiar with the thing (took nearly a minute to preview this, 4kb read, 17kb read etc.) jayal (1291)
156010 2003-06-29 01:44:00 If your PC is quite old it may have trouble running the new browsers - I had major trouble with my 98 system trying to run ie 6.0 when it first came out - just seemed incredibly slow.

If your PC is new/modern try looking for a later release of communicator or patches on the Netscape site - this may be a buggy release.

156011 2003-06-29 01:52:00 Also communicator 4.7 is very very OLD!! Also not many sites now days check they sites with that version of browser, so you might be getting some weird looking sites etc…

You could try Netscape 6.0 or 7.0 but if you find they are slow or blotted try opera or mozilla.

156012 2003-06-29 01:55:00 Yes Opera is very fast - highly recommend it - it's "better" than ie 'cause it shows connection speeds to sites and lets you know what it's doing - unlike ie which justs sits there like a dumbass leaving you wondering - has my pc crashed? has my inet connection dropped? etc. :D HadO (796)
156013 2003-06-29 02:54:00 hey HadO, why didn't i think of that? i think there's an update, 4.8, for communicator - will give it a try - cheers jayal (1291)
156014 2003-06-29 03:37:00 whats your system specs?

> heaps of drive space/ram

i'll belive it when i see it ;-)

whats your connection logon speed and whats your download speed. you may just have a poor connection. old browsers don't help. correct me if i'm wrong here but isn't "communicator" actually "netscape communicator" ?? i'd be inclind to ditch it a use the latest netscape or mozilla, tho i much prefer opera :)

> "zone alarm" but have since dumped it but that didn't seem to have any effect

of course not...there is no "effect" to see.

156015 2003-06-29 07:23:00 ah Tweakie i'm now inspired - connects at 33600bps - RAM 256MB - C:\4.00GB - D:\7.00GB - re zone alarm, i read all the Qs &As on pressF1 from this year and gathered Z A caused some problems some times - you're correct, communicator is Netscape Communicator v4.7- the email part is not a problem, it's only when i first log on and it takes an age to bring up the home page and then when i want to access any sites on the net - more help please (i'm trying to cook the old man some tea at the same time!!!) jayal (1291)
156016 2003-06-29 08:38:00 what speed cpu??

what does internet explorer run like?
if IE runs ok the nsimply upgrade netscape or use mozillia or opera.

dont have Internet Explorer
how effective is AVG? - maybe i've got a virus but AVG is not picking it
don't really want to change from Netscape Communicator, too much to change (for me anyway)

156018 2003-06-29 09:50:00 Thats your problem. Getting a faster processor might help. A lot of sites these days are flash or shokwave filled, and also with a lot of graphics. A slow processor might make you feel like your internet connection is slow ( btw, 33ks? Which isp is that?)
I reccomend getting a faster processor ( u can probably find an upgrade for your old one) and perhaps ( if your modems working fine) change your isp.
