156028 2003-06-29 01:04:00 Hi all
I am going to set my computer (running XP pro) up with 3 monitors for better game play on Flight simulator.
already i have 2 of the three going.
Which ever card is 3rd in order won't start.
i know that all the cards work

eg
Geforce2 mx400 - Agp slot (PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0)
s3 tiro - PCI Slot 1 (PCI bus 0, device 8, function 0)
Cirrus Logic 5440 - PCI Slot 3 (PCI bus 0, device 10, function 0)

wot ever one is third (in this case the Cirrus Logic) gets the error
This device cannot start. (Code 10)

if i switch the pci cards around then the tiros won't start

I've tryed pulling out my network card and sticking the video card in there but still no luck

The only thing i could think of is a conflict, but windows usaly detects it(doesn't it?). So i went to view the Resources and it has none,
it says:
This device isn't using any resources because it has a problem.

Any ideas?
thanks

156029 2003-06-29 02:23:00 Try moving the third card along one or two slots and see if that makes a difference.

Also the two PCI cards may be conflicting each other - some PCI video cards are picky about having another video card to compete with :) If you can find a similar card to one you've already got, try putting a pair in together instead of 2 different ones (the AGP being on a different port altogether shouldn't pose any problems).

156030 2003-06-29 02:26:00 Does the same if i move it to another pci slot

i'll try to get a hold of another card and see if that one works
thanks

156031 2003-06-29 05:21:00 BUS speed
there is a maximum amount of information you can send to you PCI bus, Video Cards suck it all up
some older motherboards give all the BUS to the 1st PCI slot (rendering the others slow)
i was told by a IT friend to not use the 1st and last PCI slot on my old board
move 2 PCI cards down

AGPSLOT=Geforce2 mx400
PCISLOT1=Nothing
PCISLOT2=s3 tiro
PCISLOT3=Cirrus Logic 5440 (or 4 if the fan is in the way)

look out for heat

it is best if you get a AGPcard that had dule monitor suport (Saves on PCI bus)

156032 2003-06-29 11:30:00 Its is the S3's fault, ever since Win98Se which was the last OS that fully supported them, they've not been as compatible with multiple monitors and will only accept being Primary AFAIK!

you may have issues setting it as Primary because you have the GF card (AGP?!).

Try adjusting the settings in your BIOS to make PCI the Primary Display Adapter...
