| 155940 | 2003-06-28 12:06:00 | The computer is running Win98. As Win98 is loading, Microsoft Registry Checker comes up saying it has found an error in the system files and has restored a recent backup to fix the problem. You restart and it goes though this routine again. When you boot up into Safe Mode you get this error: ERROR: HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 00601044 XMS Driver not installed To continue starting your computer,Press Enter (I press enter) HIMEM.SYS is missing Make sure that the file is in your Windows directory. Windows has stopped. Press CRTL+ALT+DELETE to restart your computer. Could this indicate that there is a faulty memory module? Any ideas? |

| 155942 | 2003-06-28 14:08:00 | Usually means faulty Ram. To find out whether it is Ram or a corrupt file carry out the following: Insert a bootdisk and restart the computer. If you don't get the error using the bootdisk the Himem.sys file is corrupt or missing. Replace the himem.sys file located in C:\Windows with the one on the bootdisk. Post back if you don't know how to do this If you are receiving the error with the bootdisk it is most likely due to faulty Ram. Ensure the Ram is properly seated. If you have multiple sticks of Ram try them one at a time to find which is causing the problem. |

| 155943 | 2003-06-29 02:57:00 | It will boot up with a boot disk and you can get it to boot up to the Command prompt ( through pressing F8, etc) without any problems. The memory check says the memory is ok. Used the MEM command in DOS and it says all the memory is there. Himem is located in C:\Windows. So I gather this means that the registry has been coruupted? Is there anyway to repair the registry without reinstalling Win98? Or can I reinstall it over top of the old installation? |

| 155944 | 2003-06-29 04:29:00 | By pressing F8 you should get a list of options one of which is "Safe Mode" Can it boot to safe mode? If not try F5 at bootup & it should fire into safe mode. Yes you can reinstall windows over the top, but if it is spyware, a trojan or a virus causing your problems then the problem will more than likely still be there. Best bet is to get any data off you want saved, format the disk & reinstall, otherwise you could be mucking around for days. If any hardware or ram is faulty, setup hopefully will pick it up & you can start the troubleshooting process from there. Best way to get the data off you want saved, is to hook the hddrive up to another machine as slave. Make sure the other machine is running a good up to date AV proggy. |
