155895 2003-06-28 11:00:00 my PC has started to do something weird - when it is first switched on in the mornings it starts up fine and usually gets into the network login and then switches itself off. I then have to turn power off and back on from the back of the PC before power button on fronts works.

I have to do this startup nowadays 3 or 4 times before PC finally starts up. If I have been using the PC, done shutdown and start it up when it is still warm I do not get this problem. It is like it cannot startup when it is cold, but once warm no problems.

Any idea what is broken?

Have a look at Power Control in BIOS. It may have settings for the power switch.

My computer sometimes does the same thing, but usually before it gets into windows. I have to press the reset button.

If its failing to start due to bearing or lubrication problems, the system may be forcing a shutdown .

Eventually the heat will get to the fan, and then it will run OK?

155898 2003-06-28 13:07:00 I've recently had the same thing on a machine.
Replaced all the usual (everything) & have finally tracked it down to a faulty capacitor on the motherboard.
Have a look at all the capacitors on your board & see if the tops of any of them are raised (Rounded over) or if there is any discharge around the top or bottom of them.
If there is, a decent techy will be able to replace it, but probably won't guarantee it wll work again as it is a bit of a dicey operation.
I replaced mine & touchwood it is working fine.
It was an older board so I wasn't too concerned if I stuffed it.
There is also an issue with some motherboards having faulty capacitors from new.
A couple of years ago an Asian company produced about 10,000,000 faulty capacitors & they are all out there on m/boards somewhere.
Do a Google search & see if yours was one of them, I can't remember where I read it now.
