155887 2003-06-28 10:27:00 I have just bought the Creative Inspire 5.1 5500 speaker set. I am finding that the sound on one particular game, and some mp3's played are inferior than what it should be. I realise that MP3's are not quality sound to begin with, but some songs just sound distorted from the satelites and others OK. And with the game, (Medal of honor to be precise), the sound of the pistol sounds crackly and distorted. The speakers are hooked up to a Soundblaster Live 5.1 card and I've tried a few configurations ubt none seem to improve . Any ideas? jerry_23 (3745)
155888 2003-06-28 12:31:00 Check that the master/wav volumes are not too high and also bass level/crossover level in the mixer software that came with your card.

The sound card has it's own amp to power un-amped speakers - your 5.1 speakers have a built-in amp in the sub to boost the source signal - try about half volume on the master and use the speaker volume knob to adjust.

They are good speakers but the sattilites do take a pounding at high volume. :D

155889 2003-06-28 12:40:00 OK. Yes I have played around a little with the AudioHQ settings of the soundblaster but not much luck but I'll rty what you suggested. I checked the website of Creative, and I was hard pressed to find any sort of support for the 5500 series. Its like they dont make them anymore. Otherwise they are good speakers. jerry_23 (3745)
155890 2003-06-28 12:46:00 The other weird thing I forgot to mention is that in the AudioHQ/Surround Mixer properties, when I perform a test of the speakers, It only picks up the front left and right, not the centre, or backs, yet music is coming through all of them. And I have the speakers set to '5.1', with the 'digital output only' checked. jerry_23 (3745)
155891 2003-06-28 13:07:00 Only have "digital output only" checked if you are using a digital speaker set up - using an optical cable from the sound card to a speaker setup with an onboard decoder - if you are using normal coaxial cables (should be about four cables at back of sound card to speakers with normal 3.5mm plugs) - if you are talking about the Inspire 5.1 5100 speakers you should not use digital output. Also make sure you centre/rear volumes are up and that AC3 Decode option is ticked if it's there.

If in the mixer settings you have selected 5.1 speakers and there is only sound through left and right I would check your cables/plugs.

155892 2003-06-28 13:14:00 Sorry the 5500 speaker setup has an external decoder and will accept coaxial or optical input - make sure you are using one or the other. Optical cable/input will use Digital output from the sound card.

If your sound card is an early 5.1 I would try the coaxial connections if you can't get the digital working properly - I doubt you would hear any difference.

155893 2003-06-28 13:24:00 Yes, mine is the 5500 series. Until a few hours ago, I was using the 'analog line-in' straight to the soundcard, but discovered the coax cable. now I have that going from the console to the soundcard, I cant tell the differrence though in sound quality. I am goin to download a patch creative has for my card, may not do anything, but i may as well try it, one of the things the patch claims is to synchronise the speaker settings in Creative Audio Mixer with the Windows Multimedia setting so it sounds like it could even things up somewhat. jerry_23 (3745)
155894 2003-06-29 01:37:00 Analog and Coaxial are the same thing (copper cable) - Digital and Optical are also the same thing - the optical cable uses light signalling to send data which then is decoded and turned into analog for your speakers as apposed to the coaxial which sends electrical signals straight to the amp and speakers - like I said you probably wont notice any quality difference as the speakers always generate analog sound (which is what your ears hear).

Make sure under Control Panel > Sounds & Multimedia > Audio Tab > Sound Playback > Advanced button the speaker setup is set to 5.1 as this should be set to the same as your mixer settings - this should happen automatically as they should be synced - maybe the patch will help but I would also check this.
