155760 2003-06-28 03:24:00 I have rebuilt a computer. The O/s is 98se, it has a Dell Slot-1 Motherboard Intel 440BX AGP Chipset, 350 Cpu, 64mb ram,3.5gb harddrive,
i have got rid of the error “Alert! Previous Fan Failure” by putting a dell cpu/heat sink and fan in,but now i get the error

"Primary hard disk drive 1 not found
Secondary hard disk drive 1 not found
Strike F1 key to continue,F2 to run setup utility"

By pressing F1 it then carries on to reboot successfully.
When you reboot the same thing happens, and when you shut it down the message comes up "You can now turn your compter off".but it wont turn off on the power switch on the front, you have to pull the plug out of the back, any suggestions.
It shows the hard drive and cd rom in the bios.

thanks Alan

155761 2003-06-28 04:08:00 Check in Cotrol Panel > Device Manager, for conflicts or disabled Items. Win 98 also had a shutdown bug but I thought this was fixed in 98SE.

If the above doesn't show you anything, check all the connections, slots and jumpers, cables on the motherboard. Do you use an IDE controller card or is it built into the board? Reset your BIOS to default if youve made changes there, is auto detect enabled for your HDD. What version is your BIOS is there a later version available that fixes IDE bugs, check the boards site, look for board drivers as well.

What wattage power supply are you using?

155762 2003-06-28 04:45:00 Use the F2 option to go into the BIOS setup next time. Then check that it has seen the disks, check any power control options, then exit, letting it save its configuration. If it hasn't saved the information it will always complain at boot time about the disks. Your selection of F1 has not saved it. Graham L (2)
155763 2003-06-28 04:46:00 awoof, what size is your hard drive?

155764 2003-06-28 05:06:00 I've had some great battles with the dell bios too (eg the clock started running ~100 times faster than normal).

The error message is because you have the locations listed set to auto in the bios. Set them to none to shut it up.

Once its working, leave the bios alone, its evil. Some of the settings (ACPI) will stop it from booting until you reset the bios, if they don't work.

155765 2003-06-28 06:56:00 No your memory doesn't fail you Murray P , there is a shutdown patch for win98SE here (www.microsoft.com) Pheonix (280)
155766 2003-06-28 08:03:00 Hi all
Went to Device Manager, and found in System Devices, errors in Motherboard Resoures and SCI IRQ used by ACPI Bus,there seems to be a conflict somewhere.
Had a 6.4 GB hard drive in it and didnt have this problem.
The Bois recognises both the hard drive and the CDRom.
The power supply is 154W.
I presume IDE controller card is built into the board
Iwill work through the replies and report back

Thanks all

155767 2003-06-28 08:25:00 154W might be a tad light since your upgrade although the specs don't appear to be too taxing (video card, other add-ons?) .

Get the 98se patch as/ Pheonix's post .

Reset/fiddle with BIOS only if necessary .
