| 155734 | 2003-06-28 02:35:00 | Hi, I have a laptop running XP and it's 15months old (3months out of the warrantee) I have been having probs with it loading. Sometimes it does load and gets to the windows logo then goes back to a blue screen. Other times it gets as far as the desktop but takes 5mins to load the task bar then freezes or goes back to a blue screen. Most ot the time it doesn't load at all I just get a blue screen with a cursor blinking in the top left hand window. The last couple of times I tried it started to load and got as far as the beep then is said booting from cd rom please insert boot disk press any key to enter Which I did but continued to get the same message. Can someone please tell me what this means and is it serious, meaning big bucks to get it fixed. I'm not sure whether to send it back to the manufacturer (and pay courior fees) or get it fixed locally..it's out of warrantee. Thanks. |

It could be a number of things causing this problem . It could be a faulty disk . It could be (less likely) bad memory . It could be just a bit of corruption in the system files on the disk . Get out the manual, and the CD which came with it . the CD will be labeled "Recovery Disk" or something like that . Depending on whether you have any information stored on the disk which you "must " have, there are a number of things you can do . First, read the manual . :D Then see if it will boot with the CD . It will give you a number of menu options . Experiment . Just use the options (and the manual) to see what they do . At some points it will give you a choice to "Cancel" before it does irrevocable things . Cancel if you are not absolutely sure you want to do that . And try something else . If you don't want or need anything on the disk, let it do a "full reinstall" . That is the simplest option, but it loses everything which is on the disk . If there is essential stuff, there are ways of recovering data . . . which is expensive when the professionals do it . There are "free" or cheap ways, which might or not work . If you can get into the "Recovery Console" of XP, I thinmk it has a "Repair" mode . That would be the one to try first . That should be pretty non-destructive of data, and will try to make a fully functioning operating system . :D |

I would try the MBR first (Master Boot Record) as it doesn't seem to be loading all the info required for windows to start (if its windows ora recovery CD, options may differ but shouln't be hard to follow, post back if your not sure with a description of what it says, I'm not sure with XP should similar to win2k) . On second thoughts do a scan disk/check disk (type: chkdsk . exe at the console) first to see if you have errors in file or bad sectors on the hard disc . Post back HTH Murray P |

| 155738 | 2003-06-28 04:46:00 | Thanks everyone . . it's a signature computer . I still have all the manuals and disks and have read the maunaul cover to cover since . The problem has only just started nothing new has been installed . I tried the system recovery disk on a good day when I managed to get it fired up . . . . . put the disk in clicked on the recovery and it just froze . And now that it's not loading at all I can't do anything . One thing I didn't mention it is running on 128mb of ram . . . have since read XP needs 256 to run effieciently . Could this have anything to do with it . . . I've had no warnings saying it is low on memory or anything similar . Thanks everyone . |

| 155739 | 2003-06-28 04:56:00 | XP should probably boot OK, even if a bit slowly . I assume it has worked . Can you access the BIOS setup? If you can, change the boot order so that it looks at the CD first . That should get you into the recovery disk . |

| 155740 | 2003-06-28 05:05:00 | Now I can't get in or go anywhere to do anything. The cd won't boot at all. | jonzsie (2689) | ||
| 155741 | 2003-07-03 03:17:00 | Thanks everyone for your help. I have taken it in and they say it's a hardware issue. They have checked the disk drive but there is nothing wrong with it so think it must be a faulty mother board....so back to the manufacturers. | jonzsie (2689) | ||
