155732 2003-06-28 01:55:00 I want to back up my Outlook Express emails and address book, as well as my Internet Explorer Favourites and History files . I would like to keep these files on a CD which I can take with me and use on other computers when required . I run several PC's of various vintage (even an old Pentium Pro!) and several versions of OS's (95, 98, ME, 2000 and XP) . I'm also frequently using other PCs around the country as required by my work .

Ideally, I want to able to double click in the usual way on the data files I would copy to floppy disk or CD, have them open up (in something approximating their native application, if possible), and access the information inside .

What I don’t want is to have to export or load these files into whatever PC I'm using, especially where I'm using some one else’s PC . I don’t want to risk overwriting the existing files . Maybe I’m being naïve, but I’m sure there must be a way to do this .

I've experimented a little already with mixed results that still don’t really meet my requirements . The classic example so far, is that unlike almost every other data file, Outlook Express data folders (stored as * . dbx) are not recognised in the way almost every other data file is in Windows Explorer by its parent application . This means if I copy INBOX . DBX to a disk or CD, then try to open it by double clicking on it in the “normal” way, in Windows XP, I get the following:

“Windows cannot open this file:

File Inbox . dbx

To open this file, Windows needs to know what program created it . . .

The two options offered by the dialogue box? …

“Would you like to use the Web service to find the appropriate program?”

(What??? I thought I already HAD the “appropriate program”?)

or (if I check the other option) …

“Select the program from a list?”

OK, of course, that must be it … but when I scroll through the list, Outlook Express isn’t there …

Is there a way to achieve what I want (better yet) a shareware or freeware program that would act as surrogate native application that could be used in conjunction with Outlook Express, and Internet Explorer Favourites and History folders?

Grateful thanks for any help with this .

155733 2003-06-28 03:44:00 DBX Right click, choose > Open With/(Choose Program, win2k does XP give same option?) > (make sure check box, alway open with, is not selected, if you don't want this to happen every time) > Other . . . . and browse to Program Files/Outlook Express . you'll nitice Outlook will be listed in the programs list in the Open With Dialogue (but not permanently if you haven't ticked always) .

You can also save the address book as coma seperated .

Favourites can be save as HTML file and saved anywhere for accessing . Export and Import under the File menu in IE . You can also access diff actions in Favourites > Organise Favourites > right click whatever folder > properties > sharing .
