156124 2003-06-29 09:14:00 As some of you know from an earlier thread (pressf1.pcworld.co.nz), I've bought myself a nice, quiet Enermax 350W power supply for my computer.

It arrives tomorrow, and I'm wondering is there any specific things I should be doing when removing the old one and installing the new - so I don't electrocute myself or fry any componentry etc.

When removing the old one, do you leave the cord plugged in to the wall (wall switch off) for grounding etc??

What stuff do you connect up first? Some step by step instructions would be great :)

Cheers!

156125 2003-06-29 09:36:00 Nothing really special.

- Turn it off & unplug the power cable. You won't be able to leave it plugged in :-).
- Disconnect the cable to the motherboard. And the molex connectors from hdd/cdrom etc. Order doesn't matter aslong as the PSU is off.
- Undo the 4 screws holding the psu in. don't let it fall.
- Screw in the new one.
- Start connecting wires. Again order doesn't matter, just make sure its OFF.

Enermax specific:
- Be prepaired to spend a bit of time fighting the mass of cables. Now would be a good time to get some cable ties.
- Find somewhere hot to put the temp sensor. I have mine jammed in the cpu heatsink.
- Connect the 3-wire fan cable. Preferebly to the motherboard system fan connector, otherwise use the adaptor included to run it off a molex.

156127 2003-06-30 12:22:00 Ok so the new PSU fits in nicely in my case. Nice and quiet too :)

Those big copper shielded cables are blimin difficult to deal with :\ had to bend n twist etc. Hardly got any room in my pc left! :p

I do have some extra cables that I have no idea what to do with at all. Apparently there is one that connects to the motherboard (real small one with 3pins) Well I found a slot on the motherboard that it kinda fits into. Can't see anywhere else it could go :p Does it really matter where?

Also it says that one of the fans is controlled by the motherboard. Where and how do I do this?

Theres a 12V cable and AUX cable, that are separate from the other mass of cables because they have their own copper shielding thing. What do I do with these ones? There weren't those cords on my old PSU?

Finally 'Temp sensor' ?? Where ? Whats it look like? maybe I didn't get one :p

I managed to get mine to fit in my unused drive bays and the spare molex connectors make a nice rats nest at the bottom of the case.

If you have a small case they must have been terrible.

It powers the external fan, and also provides speed feed back to the motherboard if you use monitoring software.

If the external fan is spinning its in the right place. If its not, fix it NOW.

The internal fan is controlled internally.

As above.

The 12V cable is for P4 boards. AUX is for server boards. Just jam them some where. I used a cable tie to bunch them up near the PSU.

Its a short cable (~20cm) that comes out with the other cables. It has a round [green?] thermal resistor at the end.

I honestly don't think it has one? I'll have a look at the website again..
