156181 2003-06-29 15:03:00 We have a game called "Machines" we like a lot. It comes with a multi-player option, for playing on the internet. My son especialy likes the game, and asked me if he can play against his best friend, who also likes the game. I contacted Aclaim support, the makers of Machines, and asked if there was any way we could play together. We do have an extra system, and I wanted to see if there was a way to connect the two computers together to both play the game. All I could get from Aclaim was that two players could play against each other on two computers if they both were running the game. But when I asked how to connect the two systems I got no response. I tried to connect the two computers with a USB cable, but they didn"t seem to find each other. One system is an old Hot Wheels system, very minimal, 333mhz CPU, only serial ports,no PCI slots, no PS2 ports, Intel BP 810 motherboard, very minimal, but enough to play the game. The other system is newer, Intel 845PT motherboard, P-4 2.4 CPU. How ca I connect the two? WILLWILLWILLWILL (236)
156182 2003-06-29 15:10:00 Not too sure about game option but you said it has a multi-player option for playing on the internet, so that is the way to do it. Is there a serial connection option or only internet? rsnic (3780)
156183 2003-06-29 15:54:00 One machine has only USB ports, and one serial port. It does have a connection to plug a phone line into to connect to the onboard modem. I thought about trying to connect through the modems on the two machines, but then I thought about how this could work if I could set up a network neighborhood of some kind. Internet connection sharing, network neighborhood, I am not all that experienced at this stuff. Like so much of software and systems, there's probably a way, but even if someone tried to explain it to me, it would all be Greek to me. WILLWILLWILLWILL (236)

Basically you'll have to network your two computer together, although you have no network cards. Otherwise both computer will have to dailup internet and play that way.

156185 2003-06-29 20:14:00 If this is the "Machines" game I think it is, then it will most likely use a TCP/IP connection bound to a network(ing) device. Therefore, the easiest way to do this would be to drop down to your local DSE and pick up 2 network cards and a crossover cable - the Forum has a faq on Networking which is relatively indepth and pretty straight foward.

From there, with your network setup, you could go into Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) so that you can both access the internet at the same time, and this will provide a backbone should you wish to play any other games against eachother.

156186 2003-06-30 03:56:00 CyberChuck- Sounds easy, but a network card...- would I need a PCI slot to plug it into? One of my machines has no PCI slots at all.Would there be any way besides this?omeone mentioned a hub of some kind. WILLWILLWILLWILL (236)

I think so

156188 2003-06-30 04:00:00 Yes, Network cards will require a spare slot in your computer (usually PCI), however, if that machine has a spare ISA slot, then you can get an ISA network card for it. Otherwise, you could look at taking out a modem/etc (I'm assuming this is the older computer?) as that will be an unecessary peripheral once the network card and network are functioning correctly
