1316549 2012-12-05 04:21:00 I needed a newphone and I was able to pick up a Huawei ideos for $30ish dollars. I was wondering if there was anything I might need to know about android. I get to use an s3 every now and then but its not mine so I don't get to fiddle with it :p

Anyway, I'd there any general things which I should know?

1316550 2012-12-05 06:35:00 1st - Cheap phones are cheap phones, people get them (because they are cheap) and then are disappointed (because they perform like s***) and when they buy comparatively amazing iPhones (because an iPhone really is amazing compared to a piece of s***) so don't expect miracles from it, that being said if you don't compare it to better things it should perform well for you

2nd - Stock ROM's are terrible. Period. Most devices have really bad stock ROM's, Samsung are well known for their bada look a like touchwiz skin. (Bada was an in house OS Samsung made and refuse to let die) S2 + 3 is laggy as hell with the stock ROM, not to mention it looks like cr*p. Some are blessed with decent ROMs however they all can be improved with custom ROMs (think battery/performance/newer versions) Only the Nexus range avoid this issue. When choosing a stock ROM try find a stable vanilla ROM.

3rd - Youtube that android, android is, like any other smartphone OS pretty darned easy to play around with but it has some awesomely cool features that you probably don't know about (eg chill "taught" me about hiding notifications from apps by long pressing in the notifications bar) so jump on the tube or search the net. I found a really cool series on android as well as general smartphone tips and tricks but I forgot to subscribe and now I can't find it. The guy was like Armando (who you should follow plus.google.com) but less professional.

4th - Android is amazing post ICS, anything pre 4.0 isn't really android to me, ICS revolutionized the droid experience IMO. If you havn't tried an ICS device and didn't like Android 2.0+ I highly recommend you re try, it will make a much better impression.

5th - Root is great, root your device, even if it's just for clockwork mod (custom recovery menu) it will save your life when you f*** up when experimenting

6th - Experiment, get the Android SDK and use ADB. Great fun for saving your ass and pissing about

7th ish - This app is great play.google.com

Best of lukc, not very helpful but you'll get there.

1316551 2012-12-05 08:31:00 Cool. Yeah I don't expect the phone to be much (it was $30 after all) but I might as well have some fun with it. I rooted the phone and installed CWM and flashed it with that. Now I just need to get a ROM that will work and work out how to install that. icow (15313)

1316553 2012-12-05 09:45:00 ROM install is kiddies play after the rooting, simply reset/wipe cache and install zip from sd card. If you have strange issues I have found fixing permissions from CWM to be a lifesaver, once with a ROM that was very unstable and with LBE Privacy guard, phone would lock up 30s after boot. 1316554 2012-12-05 22:42:00 The 1st app you want is 'addons detector' .
I'm in the droid newb stage as well.
My big issue is almost every 'free' app Ive tried is bundled with adware. We dont put up with adware on PC's so not sure why its OK on Andoid devices . That was my only disappointment with Android .
My advice, have a play, but be prepared to wipe/reset the ph a few times in the process.

Why some apps would need to use the onboard camera, without the users confirmation ,is beyond me.
"Allows the app to take pictures and videos with the camera. This permission allows the app to use the camera at any time without your confirmation."

1316555 2012-12-06 00:15:00 I had an ideos u8150 - a few decent roms are : DroniX, CM7 sahilcc7 (15483)

That doesn't mean it's malicious, that's just a warning to say "This app *can* use the Camera, and it's not going to pop up every time it wants to ask you".

1316557 2012-12-08 09:10:00 Anyone know a music app that is closer to what the one on ios uses in terms of shuffles? (not UI wise)

E.g. the ios app will make a playlist (effectively) of songs when you shuffle and stick to it until you shuffle again, letting you go backwards and forwards through the songs at will. Whereas on Android if you go back a song you will have the last played song but if you go back forward a song it wont be the same as before (re-shuffles completely i think). Unless a newer version of android fixes this? (haven't had time to install a ROM yet)
